There is currently only one diplomatic event in the game, the choice of whether to accept immigrants or not. I think a more complex mechanism for interacting with external forces could be added to future games. We can design a number of different political entities outside the map who can interact with you in different ways and even intervene in the development of your village. There are several that come to mind at this time:
-
Feudal lords
The feudal lord will try to make your village its vassal, or at least subservient to him in some way, by violent or non-violent means. Once your village has grown to a certain size, the lord(s) will send a messenger and tax collector to your village, triggering a diplomatic event. They will claim that your village is built on their territory and therefore you should become their vassal. You can simply choose to submit, which will give you protection from your feudal lord. Becoming a vassal will lead to other events, such as the lord asking you to build specific buildings, such as garrison barracks, which will provide you with some free soldiers from the lord to help you fight off invaders. Of course, as a vassal, you have your responsibilities. You will have to pay taxes to your lord, and provide some of your villagers as their manpower. Your lord will sometimes give you back some resources to help you develop. But in general, being a vassal should make you feel oppressed. Earlier we highlighted the plural of lords, which means that you may receive requests from different lords which you can manoeuvre around. Lords may be hostile to each other, and when you choose sides, the opposite side may attack or sanction you, but your lord will also stand up for you. You can also choose to refuse any request for subservience from any lord and assert your own independence. This will irritate them and they will try to conquer you by force. But as long as you can prove the strength of your villagers united on the battlefield or at the negotiating table, the feudal lords may accept a temporary compromise with you. But it’s all dynamic, and once the situation has changed, new requests will be made. -
