A return to GD

Hi guys, had a sudden urge to play GD again out of nowhere.

Haven’t played in 12 months, had a level 51 2 handed lightning shaman build and a level 31 dual wield pistol/bomber.

I never knew what I was doing, just playing around.

This time around I want to follow a tried and true build where I’ll learn things along the way and be able to finish the end-game content without being 1 shot.

What build is good right now? I want to perhaps go shield-based build that gives me some survive-ability while I relearn the game mechanics.

The only Legendaries I got were a shield called The Final Stop, and a crossbow called Silverbolt, if they’re useful in a build now, I have no idea.

I would suggest to go with what you like the most. There aren’t good or bad builds. This game has a real build variety and you should enjoy it . If you wanna use that silverbolt a phys/pierce blademaster come in my mind. Main attack being cadence, you can use some valdun pieces if you can put your hands on them. I think someone posted something like that.

Or you can go with a 1h + shield with a witchblade or a Commando. You do need to look at the latest post which should be reasonable up to date.

Hello Syntax9,

and welcome to the forum and grim dawn

Yep, there isn’t really a bad build in Normal/Veteran, even with bad gear and bad stat point allocation, it’s still possible to finish it easily, you may run into hiccups on elite and ultimate though but I feel it’s still possible to do it, my first ever build was a Conjurer, kinda distributed the stat points evenly, became ultra squishy with around 8k life. Respec’ed him and his skills became a bloody pox Conjurer and with the help of devotions upped his health to 10k and dps to around 14-20k, he can now manage a bit in Ultimate, lots of kiting but still at least he can survive. So just play what you feel like, as long as you are enjoying it doesn’t matter if you don’t follow builds.

Welcome back to GD. There are a lot of viable shield builds with the Soldier mastery… Guardsman set, Juggernaut relic, and constellations that help with shield skills (Shieldmaiden, Targos, Menhir). The damage production might start to suffer in elite and ultimate, so having a second mastery that can produce damage and/or debuff enemy resistances (Nightblade and Demo work well) will help move things along.

If you like pet builds, the Pokémon Conjurer build in the Compendium is a great build, especially for hardcore. The Necromancer mastery in the expansion might have more pet options for Occultist and Shaman players, we’ll see.

I’ve found that just about any build works as long as you make a plan and see it through, and choose all the things that support it. If you’re not certain what you want to do, then make a “proof of concept build,” and test if for damage and survival, because you really need both. But in my view, most if not all builds work, or at least they have so far for me.
