I notice that when I remove fields the ground left behind is bare with no growth. It has remained bare for about 8 years now. I wanted to use this area for a cattle barn grazing area. I tried grazing cattle on it but had a bit of trouble with “unhealthy herds” Shouldn’t grass etc grow back on fallow ground? It would be good if we could “plant” grass as well to improve pasture.
I seem to have got around this problem by creating new fields but leaving them fallow. Not sure if this is the proper solution but there does seem to be fodder in those fields and I have cut down my “unhealthy cattle” problem immensely. Now they only get unhealthy when the numbers get too great. I notice that even if I set pop to a max of 16 every few years I get a population of 24 that needs manual culling?
The answer I used was to put in a field as a ‘pasture’ planted entirely with Clover. Since clover is not harvested, it doesn’t require workers/laborers to work the field, and the result was 80% or better pasturage for the cattle.
However, I also found with a little more research that the quantity of fodder - root veggies and grain - makes much more difference to the health of the cattle than any quality of pasturage, so now I plant a couple of fields with grain - root vegetables rotations just to supply the barns
yes that’s what I did. It would be nice though if when you delete a field stuff grows back. just a thought. not a bug I guess.
