Ascension Altar only lasting for current session

There is another such thing at DC

Would this be something that could be changed with a mod?
That way everyone can just play the version of the Altar they want.
I am not good at that stuff sadly…

This was actually my instant first thought when they announced the feature. A solution to this, would be to give the player a stack of potions or usable runes/charms that grant the benefit, similar to the experience potion from malmouth. In this way, lets say, a stack of 3 like the craftable potions, would enable you to do 3 target runs.

Really interesting thread to read here. If I may put my two cents in, I misunderstood how this works completely. My hopes were to see it kind of like the atlas tree in PoE or the weaver tree in LE where you are permanently increasing or decreasing chance to more closely target farm. The fact that it isn’t exactly like that is cool, but when farming strategies seem to rely on resetting sessions (from what I’ve learned I don’t have a ton of time in the game, like 120 hours) this gets expensive fast for newer players.

A good compromise to me would either to have the offering be permanent until reset or make the session based offering cheaper. Hell the option to switch between the two would be cool. If it were changed to a more permanent style the price should increase, one of each resource is too cheap for a permanent boost.

Hope to see some kind of attention to it, I imagine as you get multiple characters going over time it’s less of a problem.

noone has ever played an ARPG in 10-minute sessions dont be dishonest

this system is supposed to give you an alternative to resetting targeted farms or just grinding SR forever, and its obviously part of the philosophy of making the campaign world interesting again. you can juice up your altar and do some key dungeons or totem farming or even go back to random elite side areas. gives you the most mileage from the materials you paid, and it’s fun variety. I was already cycling key dungeons before FoA just for fun, because resetting or sitting in SR for hours is just dreadful and boring. I guarantee the session restriction is 100% intentional and not going anywhere

One Manticore Eye to have forever increased chance of pet suffix/affix in main campaign sounds too little price for the reward it provides.
On the other hand, paying 1 Manticore Eye for a 5 min run to farm certain boss and then reset the session to do it again is too much.
It’s really hard to say what the “fair” price is here.

1 Manticore Eye for, say, 3-4 hours play, in the course of which you will probably get more than 1 Manticore Eye back, seems fair.

It’s clear this was never the intent.

Time is a closed loop.

I almost exclusively do three minute barrowholms cellar dungeons session loops on work days that typically last like 12-20minutes before i get tired enough to go sleep. Good drops, high nemesis spawn rate on ascendent together with a bunch of chests and bodies on floor for chaos spawns.

Currently as the alter is set up, a typical 20 minute session eats up like 20-40 ashes of awakening (depending on how much i want to increase the difficulty/drop rates) while also recovering about the same amount, while gaining soul echoes/fragment and other materials. The way I play the game very much does not gel with how the current altar mechanics work, but i would much rather just enjoy the game as i used to than try to optimize, but the loss of materials suck.

I got trolled by this system as I filled in every single altar box, logged out immediately after to play a different character, came back later and discovered an empty altar, so I lost all of the rare materials for nothing.

I frankly think allowing altar upgrades that would be permanent, but more costly, and ofc still swappable (at a cost), would allow for more meta progression in Grim Dawn.

You’d invest in your altar and grind campaign to unlock more and more powerful bonuses to both monsters and loot drops. These should have a cap ofc, but I think it’d feel better for most players. It would also allow the devs to experiment with raising some of the bonuses allowed to players because players would have to earn their potency with some grinding.

Does this make sense? Instead of putting one ingredient into a slot, you’d keep investing the ingredient to level up its bonuses.

And this gets complex because then players would then need the ability to scale their altar bonuses back down in case they leveled too high or just want to play comfortably.

I know it’s late in development for such a thing but I think it’d make the altar more of a joy to play.

To be clear, I know Grim Dawn is relatively anti-grind, and I love that, and I’m not saying I’d want grinding altar bonus upgrades to take too long.

There is one thing I would like to add. The most efficient way to make use of the Altar system is doing long sessions. But some of us are getting older and just cant do these longer sessions anymore. Sessions of 2 hours is just too long, but that might just be me. Also what about adding a modifier tab to increase the spawns globally. It is so annoying and costly to farm the shambler and Wendigo MI’s since they are difficult to find.
