Basic resources availability

I’ve built my town, reached tier 3 at around 135 population and I’m bottlenecked, considering abandoning the town:

  • there’s no sand on my map (lowlands), so I can’t preserve food other than smoking meat & fish (ever heard of clay jars??? that’s like the basic way of storing food for millenia), so I’m stuck at roughly 6:5 ratio of food reserves to losses. There is no reliable way of acquiring it (I had maybe 1 trader that had it across the 12 years of my town) so that’s kind of a show-stopper, and I can’t achieve proper sustainability, because:

  • the barrels can’t be assigned to a specific storage building. I keep food in cellars only. Guess what - all my barrels went to a storehouse. Where no food is kept. Great. Extended lifetime of my arrows

  • the cows seem to be completely not worth the hassle: they eat a ton in the winter and they eat the only stuff that has any reasonable storage lifetime, not giving any reasonable tradeoff in return. How do you even feed them in other biomes, where grain is next to impossible to get? Also, why on earth can’t they go through gates… What are the gates for? Is the cow an enemy???

  • there was one coal deposit of 300 units on the map. So now I have pretty much no trees left, because charcoal. And far too much workforce assigned to cutting trees, chopping trees, and then making the charcoal.

  • oh, and farming… why does it take them so long to prepare the field? I mean, look at the results that the ‘preparation’ leaves: a field full of weeds and rocks… So what were they doing for the two or three years before of ‘building’ the field? And, if the stone is so scarce, why doesn’t clearing the field yield any stone in result?

  • and the last one: who needs 60k+ of iron??? I mean, come on: my brilliant villagers scouted the area and figured: oh, yes IRON… no sand to make glass, no fish in the waters, but yeah… IRON. MOAR IRON.

I get it, you have excessive resource, need to trade for another. Makes sense, gives a town it’s specialty. All fun and games, provided you can actually trade and make trade a reliable source of missing resources, which currently is not the case.

And a trader arrival notification would be much appreciated.

i believe most of your issues are beeing already mentioned in the latest dev post. like requesting items from a trader at a premium so you are somewhat guaranteed to get stuff. also a notification for the trader is beeing added. i do agree with the barrels tho, would be nice to select/deselect if you want them in a specific building. and since you mentioned the farms… true they do plow for one or two seasons and its all rocky and full of weeds  at least it should yield 5 stones :stuck_out_tongue:
