I got a cooper to make barrels for my storage and i have not been able to get iron ingots so that i can infact make barrels… i do not have access to the building needed to turn iron ore into ingots untill the 3rd tier and have played through 6 years of game time and have not been able to get the needed iron from the traders… Seems a bit backward that i can have a building that i can not get the supplies to make it work… Help?
Welcome.
It’s not a bug. You can access to iron ingots only with trade at early game and it’s RNG.
So I just haven’t seen the right trader I need in 6 game years? That feels a little too far stretched…
I think 6 years is not really considered a lot of time with this game. I had my first raid after 20 years in one of my towns.
And I remember waiting a while to get some Heavy Tools.
“You can access to iron ingots only with trade at early game and it’s RNG.”
RNG in order to progress the game breaks gameplay flow unfortunately. There should be a clear path to progress. Early access to future tech is fine, and fun when you find the trade that allows it.
I was tier 3 and never came across a trader who was selling iron ingots or heavy tools so I was unable to progress any further.
Unless there is a way to get heavy tools to make a foundry some other way I have been unable to find it. I got to tier 3 and none of the buildings that I could build made heavy tools. No trader came to town offering heavy tools for trade.
Am I dumb and just didn’t click on the right building that produces heavy tools so I can make iron ingots?
im at 20 plus years too, never seen a trader offering what i need for barrels, its stupid that you can make a barrel maker but not have the resources for them???, farms dont really produce enough food, fishing and hunting glitches, and half the crops get wiped out to frost every year and ive got game set on super easy mode
About the cooper:
I agree that it’s a bit counter-intuitive to have the option to build one without the resources. Instead of importing goods for the barrels, I imported some heavy tools so I could get my foundries etc up and running. Once I had that going, the iron ore was turned to ingots and only then did I build the cooper.
Pay very careful attention to the crops’ details - some are 10/10 resilient to frost while others are 0/10 (check the info on the side when you hover your mouse over the crop)
I have lost some crops to frost at times because it does seem that there are random abnormal weather events (like in real life), so sometimes it’s unavoidable, but if it’s happening every year I think you need to review what crops you’re planting and when.
Glad I found an open topic.
Making me wait for a random event for a critical resource is less than great. At the very least traders need to actually have iron for sale. Haven’t seen it yet. Barring that, foundry should be tier 2 with cooper and armory going to tier 3.
The vault is tier 1 and now I’m being punished, via raiding for gold, for not having iron to build vault OR weapons.
Every single city I’ve done (4 maps to 450+, 2 or 3 others to 250-300) I’ve had iron ingots almost right away and the female trader almost always has the heavy tools for sale. Hell I went through 3 of the heavy tools on my windmill before I was even T3 last map.
Finally got some iron in year 20. Just as I was buying my 3rd set of heavy tools. Still tier 2.
Just started a new map. Atka showed up with both tools and iron ingots in year 6.
Honestly. while barrels are a nice to have item, they are not needed really until you are many years in due to low population and the easy generation of food. I have restarted numerous times and having 2 years of food stocked early game is not that difficult with some hunters, foragers and a few 6x6 farms. Yes, a bunch rots away, but as long as you have food that lasts through the winter, you are good. Heavy tools on the other hand, are very nice to get those windmills spinning.
It may seem counter intuitive, but growing your population as quickly as possible, is really not the way to go. If you aren’t turning away the occasional group that shows up, you will probably end up with too many villagers to feed.
