Can totems (skills) be destroyed?

This skills guide has this line for Storm Totem:

Also as a totem, it can be destroyed by enemy attacks should they reach it

I don’t see how they are destroyed, is it by some area damage?
Should I place them on the “safe” spots?

basically immortal unless resist debuffed i’d guess,
assuming they can even be targeted, never really noticed my totems dying actually :thinking:
