The character save files are still in my grim dawn save folder. I have the steam cloud disabled for grim dawn stash so there’s nothing in there.
I tried copying all the stuff in the save folder into cloud then my guy popped up but at level 23 which I dont nbnn und dr rand cause he’s been level 100 for awhile now. So I disabled the cloud and I’m back to square one. Any help would be greatly appreciated
If you want your characters to be back in cloud, you have to enable cloud, make the same characters by-hand, then open them on all difficulties (unless you don’t care about progress, then only open them on the one difficulty they’re currently at) and then copy the non-cloud files to the GD save folder. This will work because I do this sometimes.
So what exactly happened here ? Did you initially use the cloud (up to level 23), then used local saves for a while, then copied the local files back to the cloud dir and enabled cloud save again, only for the cloud to still see them as the original level 23 ? Is that accurate or did I get something wrong ?
Do you still have the files in the local save dir ?
Assuming I got the sequence of events right, to me it looks like the cloud decided to continue using its data over what you copied to the cloud save dir, which generally makes sense for it to do, as it would assume that it has the latest version and if the one on your HD differs, then it does so because it is older.
I am not sure how the cloud decides which one to use (the copy in the cloud or the one from your HD), but this isn’t the first time I heard it got it wrong.
In that case, to force the cloud to use the file on your HD, delete the char in game while cloud save is enabled, exit the game and afterwards copy it from the local to the cloud dir. As the cloud now has no version of the char at all, it will have to use the one from your HD as the starting point.
Never tried this myself, but it should work, it certainly cannot make things worse (assuming you still have your local save as backup).
So what happened ed was I read through threads online and tried this. I took all the files under the name of .my character in local gd saves and copied them into the steam cloud save location. I enabled the cloud in dawn options and uploaded my character then he was only level 23.
I dont get it because in my local gd save there are files under my characters name that show the date 11.10.18 that’s the last day I played him and he’s level 100. But the thing is his save files are still there I’ll n local gd saves with the rest of my characters but when I turn on the Game he’s the only one gone.
So is he gone or level 23 ? If you copy the char from local save to cloud save dir then the data in the cloud save dir is identical to the one in the save dir. Assuming you copied all data / the dir itself.
So if the char did not previously exist, cloud save should push the char data to the cloud. That is what happened when you copied it for the first time at level 23 I assume.
If it previously existed, the level 23 char still is on the ‘cloud side’ of things and could theoretically get used over the level 100 char in the cloud save dir. That is why I proposed to delete the cloud char in game first, as that should delete the char from the cloud, so the only set of data is the char you afterwards copy to the cloud save dir, much like it was the case when you copied the char at level 23.
Ok I have one more question when I’m moving character saves I open the file of the characters name and there are a bunch of different named files in the folder which o es can be discarded?
Sorry if this is noob shit I’ve never had to do this before
It’s not too late thank you I’ll check it out. I lost all motivation to play j really dont want to start him over he was my favorite character I ever made
I want to give an update and see if anyone can help to try one last time before I give up.
My character vanished. I used local save had cloud disabled for gd stash. The character save file is still in my local saves but doesn’t show up in game.
I deleted everything in the steam cloud save folder like i I read online. Then I copied my characters file into the cloud save from my local save and tried uploading cloud saves ingame just the way I read to do it online.
Even with my characters save file in the cloud and in the local save he still doesn’t show up.
So am I shit out of luck? Is the file corrupted or something.
I am surprised this is still not working. So the char does not show up at all, it does not show up as the previous level 23 version, it plain does not show up, period ?
If you disable cloud save, do you see it with local saves or is it still missing then ? If it is still missing, I assume the file has some problem, otherwise it is a cloud issue.
Exit GD, copy the char to the cloud dir, start GD with cloud save enabled, if it does not show up, the only thing I can think of is that you have too many chars, there is some kind of limit for cloud save, nto sure what that number is precisely… how many chars do you have ?
I deleted everything in the cloud after that the level 23 version wont show up anymore. I only have 5 characters. I still have the save files for the missing character in local and in the cloud after I copy paste it.
I know I did everything right I read through many threads and attempted it multiple times. I’m assuming something’s went wrong in the character file somehow
I’m just going to start at level one and remake him thank you for your help though I appreciate it. I guess I know to backup my saves now
Tried using the player.gdc and couldn’t see anything showing in my char list. Renamed the backup to player.gdc and a level 100 shows, but it looks like a dead HC char and trying play it crashes the game. Image attached.
Might be able to edit the file to remove the death, but that’s down to others with more experience than me.
Edit… no longer crashes the game, just doesn’t start the char.
The char file compressed is 89 bytes, while unzipped it is 74 KB. The backup compressed is 55 KB. This shows that the file is corrupted, it consists of 0s only, which is why the compression ratio is so much better.
As Jaknet said, the backup is a HC char that died once, so you cannot really play it again.
Well yes I started on hardcore but I realized I wanted to be softcore because I didn’t want to lose him so I just used gd stash to reset the deaths because I didn’t know how to reset him to softcore
But from what you guys say the files corrupted so it’s basically unplayable?
