I’ve made a mod to increase drops and upon looting, I exit the game to retest. I then noticed that none of the loot I picked up will save on my character. Anything they pick up in a custom game does not save. It reverts.
Any idea why?

Further information on this. It just seems to be one character, of which I copied over from my main save in the standard campaign.
I can save Formulas to the formula file though I cannot save experience, item placement, etc.
It’s as if the /user/::character name:: file is not writable or something.
Custom Campaign characters are physically different from Main Campaign characters. The Custom Campaign won’t save to a Main Campaign file.
Correct. However my custom campaign characters cannot save to themselves.
When they enter a custom game the only thing that saves for them is formulas and quests, which are not stored on player.gdc.
Otherwise, the removal of a helm or rearranging their inventory (within a custom made game) does not save upon re-entering the custom made game.
usually the game has a flag set when to autosave,
one surefire way to trigger it is buying/selling something, or maybe riftgatetravel.
I have the exact same problem while using the otherwise awesome “good-looking” mod.
I copied my main character over to the user directory but when i save/exit the custom game, the file in the user directory doesnt get updated and is basically frozen at the point where i copied it over from my main.
Ive tried launching as admin, remove the “read only” flag, disable my antivirus/firewall and and and but nothing seems to work.
It’s indeed as if either the file is readable only (which it isnt cause you can rename/delete it etc) or it seems like Grim Dawn simply doesnt execute the character saving process properly for user directory files.
This is really annoying as i can only play vanilla like this and ive found nothing except this thread concerning this issue.
Please help sumwun
NEVERMIND i got it!
What did you do to fix this? My issues are word for word what you described so knowing how you took care of it would be awesome.
Do you remember what you did to fix this?
Short version: Download/Install Link Shell Extension, right-click your character in the main game save you wanted to use in mods, and in the context menu, select “Pick link source”. Then go to the user folder (custom games folder) and right click again and “Drop as” > “Symbolic Link”
Long version: Here is someone who made a video demonstration https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=IFZM1pji35s
why do you need a symbolic link? Wouldn’t having two separate saves be better in some cases?
