☄ Collection of malawiglenn's Beginner Friendly builds

Thanks :lips:

I have a “what should I play”? QA in the opening post. What did you think about that?

It was very good. I like dual wield melee and tanky casters, but I dislike how RE works/feels so I don’t know. :frowning:

Try Stupid Dragon’s blademaster and my Lightning Caster vindicator then.

Malawiglenn, which is stronger as a beginner build. Oppressor or cabalist?

Thanks

I thought you did not wanna play with Ravenous Earth :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I wrote in the guide (and also Nery wrote the same in his)
Cabalist is sturdier (heal and free resistances)
Oppressor has potential for more damage (OA & DA shred)

For a full guide, download this pdf-file from my Google-Drive:
Primal strike / Savagery 2H Warder (pdf)
For updates to the guide, see below.

This forum post will be used to post updates about the guide, variations of builds, tips and tricks etc.

GrimTools-link to basic builds:

My personal favorite of these two basic builds is the Primal Strike focused, but is slightly more wonky to play with.

Version for 1.1.4.0 patch:
https://www.grimtools.com/calc/RZRQy1BV (Primal Strike version)

Teaser video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qYgK8Nweb3o (Primal strike version)

Alternative Devotion Route: with Revenant for attack speed, more life steal and flat resistance reduction (instead of Rhowans Crown): https://www.grimtools.com/calc/d2j8XvnZ for the Primal Strike version of the build - of course this works also with Savagery version.

Vindicator version of the Primal strike build:
https://www.grimtools.com/calc/pZrDg9k2
I did not change anything else than skill points. Inquisitor have free aether and chaos resistance.
You need more OA on Vindicator, to activate Deadly aim consistently.

Elementalist version of the Primal strike build:
https://www.grimtools.com/calc/4ZD69712
You need a bit more DA compared to Warder and Vindicator.

Updates

1.1.3.0 patch
Primal strike transmuter will lower the weapon damage on Primal Strike a bit more, but the ultimate ranks in PS will increase weapon damage so its basically no change in dps.

Kraken devotion got -50% damage (like 2% less damage all in all) but gained +4% physical resists - which is dope!

1.1.4.0 patch
The MI belt Chains of Brandis got +1 to Shaman and also Vitality damage converted to Lightning. This means that it could be good to invest a bit more into the Wendigo Totem modifier for flat vitality damage (and life steal) - that flat vitality damage will, partially, get converted to lightning which is what this build is all about.

Regarding Dual Wielding and 2H versions of the Beginner Spinner

click to read

Some have asked me why I am not dual-wielding.
The reason is that EoR have very low weapon damage component. The main reason why people are dual wielding is to get damage conversion on EoR and Soulfire. The sword of choice here is Mythical Beronath, Reforged which will convert all elemental damage on EoR and soulfire to physical damage.
Now here comes the thing, each flat source of physical damage will get separate check against armor on monster. This also accounts for each flat elemental damage source that will get converted.
image
It’s converted fire damage to physical will NOT be added up to the flat physical damage, the game will check those sources of damage separately. Same holds for soulfire. Though the damage tool-tip in game will tell you that these converted damage will get added, they in fact not.

So. even though you might see a much higher sheet DPS in game, this will not reflected in actual damage dealt.
In order to REALLY do much more DPS as dual-wielding you need to have both EoR and soulfire maxed (26/16 and 22/12).

Nevertheless, you can try dual wielding if you want.
I would suggest that you get one of these relics (if you do not have Direwolf crest)
Bladesworn Talisman Devils Crossing faction blueprint.
Bladedancer’s Talisman much better than the relic above, Hyram in Steelclap sells it from time to time so you can powershop him.

Then get the non-mythical version of the Beronath sword Beronath, Reforged this blueprint can be sold by the Vendor in Ancient grove. This is how you can powershop it:
Just as with any vendor, it is your level that matters not difficulty. So do a session in Elite, clear the whole level where the vendor is. Then go to the next level and stay there for 10 seconds or so. Go back to the previous level and visit shop again, he should have updated his inventory. Remember also to look for other blueprints like Prismatic Diamond

This is the basic build with dual-wielding
https://www.grimtools.com/calc/w26RbYx2
(I also changed gear and augments for fixing resistances)
(Picked up Judgment skill for DA shred)

Now regarding 2H. This is a big problem, since 2H weapon have much lower attack speed.
You would need to change devotions, to include the kraken. In addition, there is really no “budget” 2H weapon for physical damage, i.e. faction weapon, freebie item or similar.
I suggest that you start with the Sword & Shield version first, then try the Dual Wield version. And after a bit of farming perhaps you will get one of these weapons:
Gutsmasher
Avenger’s Crusher

You need to find Elemental to physical damage conversion elsewhere, there are plenty of shoulders that provides this, also Octavius set Helm and Chest armor.

You might be able to do Fire EoR, if you get a big 2H weapon with lots of Physical to fire damage conversion and attack speed like this faction blueprint weapon Blazerush (you need Enchanted flint in the weapon too as well as completely changing the devotions to boost fire damage and fire resistance reduction, have a look at my build sketches in my collection - I have a 2H Fire EoR build sketch there: https://www.reddit.com/r/Grimdawn/comments/bzm9fr/2h_phys_eor_warlord/

If I were to make it into a 2H Fire Spinner Warlord, it would look something like this:
https://www.grimtools.com/calc/d2j84mjZ

Here is a more “decked” version of a 2H spinner warlord https://www.grimtools.com/calc/d2j84mxZ read here for some of my suggestions on how to improve it https://www.reddit.com/r/Grimdawn/comments/bzm9fr/2h_phys_eor_warlord/

Something more regarding leveling this build:

You do not need to play with Word of Pain up to level 30, you can switch to stormbox + wind devils earlier as this guy suggests:

Note, another reason for playing something that is NOT the end-game build defining skills is that you might actually get bored of playing with the lightning skills at level 90… keep this in mind: you will play with the build defining skills for a LONG TIME but with Word of Pain only for 4-6 hours or so…

It also seems that I have missed this faction amulet Dreeg Arcane Pendant that might be suitable to use before you craft the goal-amulet Aetherbolt Pendant that is mentioned in the guide and is used in the Grim Tool build above.

1.1.3.0 patch
Maelstrom and Storm Box got some nerfs. This means that I do not think that the Storm box oriented version is viable for starters. The strongest version now I think is the storm totem oriented one. We also got a new “free” item: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8i73lyULyo0 the “totally normal dawnshard” which gives +3 to Maelstrom.

Updates

1.1.3.0 patch

  • Blazeheart sword is now classified as a dagger and thus you need 495 spirit to wear it. It has less cunning requirement instead, which means that you might wanna use a lower tier version of Ugdenbog gun when leveling - or use Hawk devotion temporarily for cunning discount.

1.1.4.0 patch

  • Monster Infrequent - Basilisk Fang: added 100% of Physical dealt as Acid modifier for Aegis of Menhir. We MUST to use another medal now since physical damage will get split into fire (via shield) and acid (via medal). This is of course a huge dps loss on the Aegis shield throw skill.
These are good alternatives for medal to maintain Aegis dps:
Kymon’s Badge if you side with Order of Death’s vigil you can farm this (which you should so that you can farm Kymon’s nemesis “Iron Maiden”). However, you can also buy these from the secret vendor in Bloodgrove. Make sure to get one with good offensive and defensive stats. You can reset the shop by opening a riftgate and leave the area and visit some other vendors and then go back. Repeat until you have a good one. Good place to farm them is Blood Grove, southwest of Fort Ikon and in the Tomb of Acrhon Barthollem. Also we have two faction medal that can be good for us: Coven Mark of the Arcane and Malmouth Badge of the Elements.

  • Gargoyle Girdle this belt now gives pierce to fire damage conversion which we want and also +1 Oathkeeper skills. Good choice if you get a good rolled one. Though I must say I preferred its earlier conversion more (the increased armor piercing) and I will advocate for the devs to take that back. So for now, let’s consider this a belt that only gives + Oathkeeper.
    image

  • Ugdenbog Waistguard now gives +1 Inquisitor skills and is also a decent belt to use, especially if you get a very good rolled one.

Here are the old values for your budget vindicator @malawiglenn , as grimtools is still pre-patch.

Looking at the videos, they weren’t fast killers and needed to kite a lot already.

@Boromonokli thanks I have already made such pics

Storm box was mainly for proccing and reducing monster DA. But I did mention “storm box focused” alternative build in the guide, perhaps I need to say something about that set-up. Most of the damage storm box deals is the electrocute in lightning tether. Perhaps the best version now is the “storm totem focused” one.

I have testplayed the build, it is still “good” you know. But still, those nerfs where uncalled for imo - rather nerf that ridiculous cyclone set.

Also there was a new freebie item that might be decent for budget lightning caster builds:
The totally normal dawnshard: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8i73lyULyo0
but i still prefer the blue faction weapon for +1 shaman skills

The most annoying change in the 1.1.3 patch was the change of blazeheart to dagger… like why?! I use that weapon on many chars, now I have to farm attribute respec potions…

When I play the new patch will try to dummy test how much damage deals separate spells in my Vindicator.Already had a discussion about that in previous patch and the most damage was already from Storm totems.

Btw question, that always bug me.The font, that you use on your descriptions @malawiglenn FG beginners builds looks familiar,is it from Diablo II ?

For the 1.1.2 version of the lightning caster vindi, I fould that maelstrom was strongest in damage. But now perhaps Storm totem is best. But for sure “stormbox version” is DEAD

My “malawiglenn” logo is with the Diablo font. The other text is with a font called “morris”

Dead builds :white_check_mark:

I knew it about logo.It looks nice.

I might revise the lightning caster vindi guide later with more lightning tether though but now storm box is just for proccing devos and DA shred

https://www.dafont.com/morris-roman.font

I think this font is very close to grim dawn font or at least fit the style of the game.

and speaking of DEAD builds, I will post my Rune of Hagarrad vindicator in like 15 minutes :open_mouth:

Updates

  • For a safer devotion map, skip Blizzard proc and get Turtle shell proc from the Tortoise Devotion.

  • This belt can also be good for an early end-game build (and for leveling) Gargoyle Waistguard since it provides Vitality damage to Cold damage conversion, which will make Bat devotion proc heal you better

1.1.4.0 patch:

  • The Gargoyle Waistguard can be good until you get pierce to cold damage conversion as mentioned above for better Twin Fangs healing.
  • Ugdenbog Waistguard can be another choice for end-game since it now gives +1 Inquisitor skills.
    image
  • Overall, Rune of Hagarrad got a minor buff. It now deals 25% less damage in center of impact compared to 30% less before. This is a 7% damage increase.
  • Faction axe Witch Moon now adds flat cold damage to RoH, which means that it is a very good choice now even if you do not have 100% pierce to cold conversion. It still has a small +%cold damage value but the +3 bonus to Biting Cold is nice.
