Commando : go full physical or split fire/physical ?

Hello !

I’m looking for opinions or general recommandation.

I’m a lv78 Commando. (soldier/demolitionist). I started this character as a tank to assist my nuker friend. And it works. I’m a brick wall. Resistance, armor, hp, regen and shield block are super-high and it shows.

But I have super-low dps. (Most of my dps is retaliation) Which is fine. But I’d like to tune it up a little bit.

As a demolitionist, i triied, up to this point, to add fire dmg. It hasn’t worked so well. My mortars are not that strong (about equal fire & physical dmg). My retaliation is mostly physical and piercing. My base dmg is about 35% fire and 65% physical.

I’m almost positive I could get higher numbers if I started aiming at pure physical dmg. But would that be wise ? Does basic physical dmg get higher chances to get blocked/resisted ? Or should I aim at whatever gets my numbers the highest ? I would tend to think that attacking with 2 elements(fire+physical) would ensure better penetration… But it would also prevent me from reaching highest possible stats since I split my boosts over 2 specialisation…

Ideas/comments ?

Thx

Can you make a grimcalc of your build with skills and devotions ?

It will be easier to help you improving your build : https://grimcalc.com/

I could… But I like to build my stuff myself. I built a tank and I’m tanky as f***.
Just looking for a tweak. And I know how to boost my fire dmg… And I also know how to remove my fire dmg and go all out on physical dmg.

As a general idea, I’m looking for general opinion/discussion.

(If the discussion goes there, I’ll post it tonight when I get home. Not from my cell.

I´m not experienced enough to give advise but…

…upload your character in here http://www.grimtools.com/calc/ and people will have better understanding of your gear, skills and devotions.

Going pure physical would be better than physical/fire or fire, because most enemies only have a little bit of physical resistance whereas some enemies have high fire resist. Break Morale is a great physical resist shred and Forcewave demolishes their armor.

Look up Physical Forcewave build by Ch’thon in these forums to get an idea of what I’m talking about. You can easily go Forcewave/Blitz + Retaliation, the Earthsplitter axe is a solid legendary basically made for the build.

grimcalc is so 1.0.0.8

Thank you. Some things to consider. That physical resistance vs fire resistance is exactly what I was looking for. I’ll try to be creative with this. (I prefer to create my own stuff then re-doing what someone else did :-P)

I hear you bro, best of luck. It’s difficult at this point to come up with things no one else has posted yet, but it can certainly be done

I am currently running a sword and board commando. I am trying to invest in physical damage although my main attack is firestrike. I could go cadence+blitz but I really dislike the Cadence feel. I think our dps will be low unless we take Cadence though.

Another way is to go 2H, but you will be less tanky without shield.

Yeh. I use firestrike and mortars. My dps is around 5500 a d mortars do about 1500+1600.

But my retaliation decimates trash mobs with huge satisfaction.

I also have high hp regen, many, MANY defensive procs, and very high resistance all around.

I’m thinking switching some fire+ skills, components and augments to “all dmg+” and “physical+”. Switch firestrike/mortars for cadence. (Me retaliation takes care of ennemy swarms, so I only need a good(better) boss killer.)

Pure Physical Cadence is the best for Sword and Board, imo.

Oleron-Din with Hammers is still nasty, if kitted properly.

Maxed Cadence+Deadly Momentum > Firestrike for single target damage. And almost all of it is physical (with a bit of bleed from Fighting Form).

Full Physical:

  1. Commando mastery offers high synergy with Soldier in terms of producing raw physical damage. The flat damage boni and the %damage Vindictive and Temper trees provide is just downright nasty. On top of Cadence tree and they physical bonus from Bulwark or the OA/Crit Potential from Oleron’s Rage

  2. Physical resist reduction [Flat (Warcry) + % (Devotions)] is abundant and accessible to you.

  3. Physical resists for baddies in this game is not that great. I have a harder time running single elemental damage builds on test toons than Physical.

Hybrid:

  1. Soldier offer 0 synergy to Commando in terms of fire damage.

  2. Playing Hybrid by definition almost always would mean for you to split your damage boni to different sources.

  3. You have access to the powerful universal flat resist reduction (BWC) but at the price of heavy skill point investment in both mastery tree and the skill itself. With the Soldier tree being naturally skill point intensive in terms of passive. You will literally be trading Offense for Defense. That’s your call to make

I think it all depends on what your personal preference is and if you have the gear to make it work. I would think the pure physical would be the best choice for new-comers without godly gear because its so brain dead to build.
