Congratulations Crate on the excellent reviews!

I just wanted to say, “the proof is in the pudding” etc.

84 on Metacritic via critics is DAMN GOOD for an indie studio!!

In particular, IGN and PC Gamer’s reviews were both glowing and honest.

There is not a doubt in my mind that the big studios are watching you guys…

It’s interesting that both of them complained about too much loot.

The IGN reviewer knew about the loot filter but stupidly decided not to use it because “that’s just leaving good money literally sitting around on the floor for no reason.”

The PC Gamer reviewer didn’t know about the loot filter.

The conclusions we can draw from this are that:

  • “Professional” game reviewers still suck
  • The loot filter should be more emphasized

I’m considering starting a game review site that is basically solo-run, or maybe I’d accept writers that I hand pick and have seen them play games.

I’m sick of this big reviewers rushing to get a review out in a timely fashion to compete with their competitors, diminishing the validity of their reviews. Most of the time their reviews are more like a review of a first glance at playing the game.

It is shit. Fuck. Them. Oh and then there’s being bribed by triple-A companies. So yeah, considering making a game review-site with integrity.

wow that’s really something.

I have a friend that writes game reviews for a living and I literally have to avoid talking with him about games at all costs. If I don’t, I will end up strangling him. For starters, he doesn’t even play very many video games. As if that alone weren’t confusing/enraging enough, the things he nitpicks over in games is just infuriating.

For example, he’ll pick a Mario-type game and complain it wasn’t “gender-conscious” enough because it forces you into a male role. smh

A game critic that does not play video games enough? Lmao

How do you become a critic for games at that point?

I don’t even know. Like, it bugs me to this day but I’ve never wanted to ask for fear of the snide, biased, snotty explanation he’ll give.

He just buys whatever new game(s) just came out and plays it for fifteen mintues and then bitches about something totally arbitrary for a few paragraphs. And then they pay him.

What a waste of money for that company…

The key to becoming a good critic is to first be completely lame at the thing you’re supposed to critique. Tone deaf violin players make excellent critics, especially if they haven’t been able to play Paganini’s easiest caprices like 12 or 24. At all. Cigar puffing midfielders that can’t last 90 minutes are avid critics of tactical formation. Painters that can’t draw a convincing stickman, even me right now criticising the critics. It’s ironic, but the core of existence is irony, so there’s nothing to worry about!

I find that reviews, when done by a single person, are more about the reviewer and less about the article reviewed. It goes without saying that people that are really into a genre carry a heavier opinion, but sometimes fatigue can creep in and devolve into escapism through niche veins and avante-garde experiments.

I think there are like “shared” reviews where the whole “office” plays the game and offers their opinion or separate scores, but with so much games coming oug nowadays, it’s not practical anymore. I think user rating is a good indication for games.

And yes, it’s good to see Grim Dawn have a very good reception!

The problem with reviewing a game like GD is that you have to invest time and immerse yourself into the world. You can’t simply load it, play for 1 hour and write a constructive review on it. Some of these modern “console styled” games you probably could do this as after a few hours the total game and experience is over anyway and you can virtually resign it to the trash can and the re-playability is probably minimal. Fortunately there are some reviewers out there that do take their job seriously and evaluate the game correctly by investing the required time and dedication into it ( and probably with GD, even getting addicted ). These are the reviewers whose reviews have resulted in the well deserved praise for the game that are abounding on the web as they have seen the depth and richness in the game and can appraise it objectively.

I will add my “pinch of salt” and totally endorse Crate on the Quality, Playability and Value for Money of this product.
