Crate's Grim Dawn Related RTS Project

@medierra With all the up and coming giants with their RTS, do you guys anxious about coming out late after the giant had their fight?

Anyway, I wish all the best for you guys! Keep it up with the success!

Since the RTS is set in a timeline before the Grim Dawn, will there be a chance to see these beasts alive?

Zantai said that they can be seen as “spawns of Beronath”. Beronath is the mythical “Great Beast” that is long dead in the GD timeline, but what if Beronath is still alive in the RTS timeline? Maybe there will be a Beronath faction? That would be pretty awesome.

What if Beronath is actually still alive in the GD timeline…

And here I was thinking that a giant skeletal corpse would have made a bomb setpiece/arena in FoA…

:scream: :grava_yes: Time to test!

Some bits and pieces from the 29th August 2023 dev stream.

With the 3rd expansion we’ll be meeting the Kurn and learning about their history which features in the upcoming RTS game.

RTS will feature the Kurn, Eurlan and Arkovia.

Mammoths might feature prominently in the RTS.

A mammoth! Some real-time strategy games also have such monster units.
The most interesting thing to me is this design:mammoth tank form Red Alert 3.

Well, well, well. Found these comments over on the GD facebook page in replies to Zantai’s latest thread about FoA.

I know this is old and you’ve listed a few more RTS games you’ve played in the past, but I haven’t seen Age of Mythology. For me it was the RTS I played the most. What I really liked about it was that it had a lot of character. You could pick your gods to worship, which gives you the updates for your units and special myth units. I felt this made it more engaging and gave you some options to adjust your strategy when moving through the ages, compared to AoE2 where it always feels a bit bland to me.
I hope your RTS will also feature some meaningful choices to be made along the way (other than straight upgrades for everything) and opportunities for making come backs.

I didn’t know this thread before today. That was an exciting read for an AoE2 enjoyer like me. There were some juicy anecdotes.

A note about the RTS genre being very much alive: the envelope provided by Microsoft for AoE2 tourneys in 2026 is more than 100k$! In fact, the biggest tourney alone has a prize pool of 100k. It’s really cool. Events Calendar - Age of Empires - World's Edge Studio

I’m really intrigued and eager to see what’s news with this project and its new graphics engine… good luck Crate Entertainment

as someone who’s never really enjoyed pvp too much, but absolutely loved sc2 coop (and the campaigns are fun, even works surprisingly well with randomizers mixed in)
any thoughts on the possibility of a similar mode?

Are you playing 1v1 or teams?

If you do teams you are most welcome to play with me, if you want man.

I have some deadly rush tricks, and some called me in SC2 the cheese man :joy:

I’m currently Master tier 1 in teams.

Okay found out a little bit more about the survival game in an interview Arthur did recently. Seems it’s apocolyptic, semi sci-fi.

Bad news - it looks like another 18 to 36 months before RTS and/or survival are released.

Info at the end of this.

After working on Farthest Frontier and Fangs of Asterkarn, I can see how it will be a while before this game is ready to play. With Grim Dawn 2 in the farther future, I am guessing it will be released around 2035 - 2037?

Yeah, 2035 is my prediction for Grim Dawn 2 also. Crate always takes their time, and after Fangs of Asterkarn release they still have to do post-release support, continued support of Farthest Frontier and then the RTS, and the survival game.

Honestly, 2035 is probably the best case scenario for GD2, 2037-2038 is very much a possible timeline.

That’s not a bad thing. It is much better to release fewer games, which are good, deep and can be played for thousands of hours (like Grim Dawn), then to publish a new game every 2 or 3 years, which people stop playing after a year.

I agree 100%! I wish more gaming studios had the integrity/devotion that Crate has for making great computer games. I have taken a few breaks here and there since Covid started, I always wipe the slate clean before I start anew, and I stopped the cloud saves on GoG. So… I don’t know how many ‘total’ hours I have played. However, It would not surprise me at all if it was in the 1,000’s either. Heck, there is a good chance that I have played more Grim Dawn than Diablo 3… and I have played the heck out of that game.

The RTS and the Survival games are withing 36 months (18 to 36 months) from release…medierra (Arthur) said that in an interview.

Zantai (and maybe medierra, just a guess though) will start to work more to define what is Grim Dawn 2 (mechanics of the game, masteries… ect) by the end of the year in theory. It was said once the expansion of FOA is released. So I would guess a release for Grim Dawn 2 in 2030-2032, probably closer to 2032.

I guess it depends where the RTS and Survival games are at in 36 months or less.
At the same time, Crate is about 30 employees from what I heard in the interview.
Also, at the peak of a game development cycle, they tend to be around 10 people more or less (from what I know and it depends on the game). Lastly, devs are cycling in between projects depending on were they are needed.

They also said that Forgotten Gods would be the last expansion. They also said Fangs of Asterkarn will release during 2025. They say a lot of things, but one thing they consistently say wrong are the release dates of their games.

I mean, great if those two games release in the next 3 years. I am sceptical, but I would love to be proven wrong.
