Hello i have this game new (gog version) and wanted to play with a mod. I cant select a custom game, this option is locked. I searched the internet and the homepage without solution.
How can i start a custom game to play the campaign with a mod active ?
thx
Download the mod, use WinRAR or similar to extract into MyGames/GrimDawn/CustomMaps and you should be good to go.
Mods are made by the fans, they’re not part of the game as such so you have to install each one you want to play.
Make sure to play a separate character when playing a mod, otherwise you might screw up your character. If necessary label them with the mod you’re playing them in so you don’t forget.
Is it set up separately for GoG GD? Normally you put the mods in GD in the mods folder in GD’s main installation directory. If it isn’t there then you just create a folder named mods and put it there.
My Games/Grim Dawn is only the save folder structure for GD, and I thought it was the same for the GoG release as well?
Um, don’t know powbam. I just assumed it would be the same as for TQ. I can’t see any mod folder under either Grim Dawn in My Games or under GOG. Guess you could make a Mods folder in either place and put them there.
Wherever GoG installs directly to (the location would be the one that contains the Grim Dawn.exe executable and all the assorted mod tools as well). That’s where the mods folder should be located or created in (if it isn’t there).
Note: you would name the folder “mods”, minus the quotations.
In that case it’s probably C:/GOG Games/Grim Dawn. I’ve got a modding guide PDF and a modding tutorial WinRAR ZIP archive file in there. The Grim Dawn application is in there too.
No GrimDawn.exe file in either location though. Would it be called something else?
Hmm. I don’t see why they would use different naming conventions for GoG. You could try opening Windows Explorer starting at the root of your C drive, hit Ctrl+F then type in Grim Dawn.exe in the prompt that appears and search the drive for it.
Weird tho because with the Steam install the executable is located in the same folder as the modding pdf.
Unless someone else using the GoG version can chime in and verify the proper default install location.
Alternatively, if you are launching GD from a shortcut you can right-click the shortcut, select Properties, and from there you should see the path the shortcut is using to launch the executable.
Edit: On re-reading what you wrote you say the GD application is in there but not the executable? They are one and the same. You likely have file extensions hidden in folder properties so that you do not see the exe extension after the filename.
It sounds like you are in the right place in that case. This is where you would create the mods folder.
Yes, looking at the properties powbam it shows as C:/GOG Games/Grim Dawn/Grim Dawn.exe so it must be the application.
Well, if I ever get around to playing any of the mods I now know where to put the mods file. On second thought maybe I’d better make one now being that I’m getting old and forgetful. But then I’d probably forget I’d made it and where it’s hiding.
In Windows explorer, right-click on the mods folder after you create it, from the dropdown select Pin to Quick access. The folder will now be in the Pane at the far left of Explorer under Quick access and readily accessible. (assuming you are on Windows 10? If not there should be some similar function in other versions)
…
To enable viewing of file extensions (again in Windows 10, others will be different to enable this) go to the root of your C drive in Explorer, look up top of the folder and select the View tab. In the options that appear look for the File name extensions checkbox. Tick it. (If you wish to see the extensions, of course)
No, clinging on to my Win7 machine for as long as I can, though I get so many crashes right back to the PC rebooting when playing TQ or GD I may have to consider upgrading to a new machine. Funnily enough the sales are on and the OH and I were looking at some good bargains; some were Win8.1 and others Win10.
It gets really aggrevating at times as it’ll happen several times a day and then go for days without any problems. I think it’s on the hardware side somewhere, but obviously something in the two games it doesn’t like as they seem to be what causes it to crash. The OH has given it a thorough cleaning, but hasn’t cured the problem, it’s been going on for nearly a year now.
I’ll write myself a note about the mod folder in OpenOffice and file it in my Grim Dawn stuff.
