So out of those list of changes that were just posted, I can understand where some of them were coming from, especially regarding upping the res on some worse textures.
However, I have to completely disagree regarding the reasoning for the sun position change, all it did was hide most shadows even being cast in the first place. Because your heading north for most of the game, it made sense for the sun to be where it was since you could clearly see the shadows being cast on trees, enemies, buildings, etc. But now, the shadows being cast are becoming hidden under the very object they are suppose to be casting from. And too me, shadows is what helps the world in general look far more detailed. So yea, I personally would wish the devs would just revert most of those graphical changes back to the way they were and instead work on implementing more video setting so we can fine tune how gd looks for us.
And yes, I also think like many others are saying now that the camera angle changes are also for the worse.
Your pics are perfect examples of exactly what medierra was talking about why he had an issue with the “before” look.
Its exceedingly dark and muddy and actually looks kinda crappy.
The after shot does indeed show his other point, the terrain detail. Looks heads and shoulders above the before shot… Once they improve the washed out brightness vibe that’s happening the game will be back to itself, in the meantime I’m confused about what is so hard for people to adjust the gamma down some to make it darker?
Gamma adjustment doesn’t work in windowed borderless. The game stutters when I play in fullscreen. And I’m not going to adjust my screen just for this game and mess up everything else I do.
Why should people be forced to play in fullscreen when windowed borderless is an option regardless?
I could be wrong but didn’t the shadow positions get changed as well? That didn’t seem necessary. I know at some instances the game’s before look might seem shitty and the above pic i do agree it’s a little muddy and some signs were unreadable before. But for most part of the game the older quality suited much more and added the grim feel to it.
It would be better if they manage to achieve a middle ground though
Toggle it on (Use Nvidia settings option), hit apply. Play game. Exit game. Toggle off (Other applications control color setting), hit apply. Close control panel. Simple. Takes a few seconds at worst and “messes up” nothing, because, ya know, that’s how toggling works.
Or just wait until they release the hotfix patch /shrugs.
Speaking of toggles. I would have preferred that they just have a toggle for the before and after graphics. Making a compromise runs the risk of leaving both sides dissatisfied. I’m on the nothing was broken that needed to be fixed camp.
To be fair if you go back and read medierra’s post he says that there was a problem (with specular something something something) that was in need of rectification, which precipitated and snowballed into the other changes.
I don’t think this particularly calls for a toggle (which would likely be pointless for you anyway since you play in Borderless. It may not work for you if they did, akin to how the gamma slider works). Or maybe it would work, I dunno.
Post processing is a toggle that already does exactly that anyway I guess.
I guess the graphics before just seemed so fitting for the setting and lore. And of course spending a lot of time with those settings through multiple characters, you get very used to how things look and then to get a surprise overhaul with the last patch caught everyone off guard.
Crate does great work and is awesome to provide continuous updates to the game. And GD’s world is gorgeous. I just feel like some of that has been lost now.
I actually hate the postprocessing, both old and new. I think it looks terrible because it makes everything too bright and it looks like the whole world is being blasted by intense sun rays.
So the change was not very noticeable to me. Still, i wouldn’t be against going back to the previous look, even though i don’t care much for it.
On another note, I wish they would have put this in the patch notes, so I didn’t have to waste time figuring out what was wrong with the game or my computer. I heard of some people checking/updating their drivers.

Sure, it’s a matter of personal preference what one finds pleasing. I think that the previous look was much better.
But in the case of Grim Dawn, I think that a change like this is problematic because the game built its identity around its dark and gritty atmopshere - if you read the reviews after the release, everyone mentions it; and the dark and gritty atmosphere is there in the function of the story. Remember when Diablo 3 was released and everyone complained it was too cartoony? And then when Reaper of Souls came out, people said that it was good it was made darker, in the tune of Diablo 2? This dark atmosphere is why a lot of people thought of Grim Dawn as spiritual successor to Diablo 2. In my book, that’s a good thing.
Also, as someone mentioned it, a lot of people got used to playing it the way it was, and it’s somewhat strange to make such a drastic and visible change this long after release. This goes for the camera angle also - the moment I loaded the new version, I saw something is off with the view, after 220 hours of playing it as it was originally.
Just to make sure, my opinion of Crate as a company has only gotten better after this. They tried something that majority of people didn’t like, they talked to people, and are willing to do something to please the community. That’s just great!
I only hope that they’ll revert the camera changes, together with the brightness…
Honestly I’d rather they just unlock it so we can adjust the Vertical pan ourselves, to our own liking. They don’t even have to give a full up/down range… Just enough to tweak it to whatever people find suitable.
And a key bind to lock/unlock camera zoom would be nice.
The bloom is so strong I literally can’t see a thing when I’m fighting in some areas, every pack of mob is just a big blob of light, can’t even tell if they’re alive or dead, or what they’re doing.
While that would be perfect, I’m just really glad this has been mentioned at all… as I seriously thought it was me losing the plot not being able to find a view distance that felt “normal” :p:p
Plus the upside is they don’t hafta worry about fiddling with it themselves anymore and listening to people that don’t like what they set it to bitch about it. Just put it in the players control and be done with it.
Ya that’s why I said they don’t have to give full range… We don’t really need to be viewing it at ground level. Save that kinda thing for the trainer hacks.
