Uhh hmm… so I was reading someone’s comments that the water in 1.0.0.7 looks like 2005 compared to the before screenshot of 1.0.0.6… except, the water hasn’t changed at all. (although to me it’s always looked like 2005 water because that’s pretty much what it is).
Anyway, I realized the big difference with the water was the fog. There’s no distance fog in the before screenshot but the fog isn’t new. I checked on an older machine that I haven’t synced in a few months and it doesn’t look anything like that old “before” screenshot. It really doesn’t look that different from how the game looks now, just slightly less bright and sun from a different angle.
How old is that before screenshot? It must be ancient or have some messed up video settings because the fog hasn’t changed in that area for probably a year or two.
Because you’re part of the playerbase and it seems only right you “help” them with your feedback to improve the game experience.
Grim Dawn wasn’t made in one night you know. It was thanks to the constant feedback and developers who’re willing to listen to the playerbase that made such an enjoyable game.
And yet you say “why should we be testing all this for you”, I think you’d like if he decides to flip off the entire playerbase by taking a dump on the game, kinda like what Blizzard did by alienating more than half its playerbase.
Sure the recent design choices seem questionable, i myself am not a big fan of them but they’re willing to change things based on our reactions.
As to medierra himself, looking forward to the next version’s graphical changes. Happy Holidays
Btw whenever i click on a recently bumped thread i often get redirected to an older post rather than latest one. And i end up replying to the old one (should i fail to notice that is). Is it just me getting redirected or is it a limitation of the forums?
When you go to New Posts and click on the check mark before the thread title, you are taken to the first unread post. If you click on the arrow button in the Last Post column, then you get to the last post.
Here are screenshots from exactly the same position (using dev debug teleport to coords command) showing pre-1.0.0.7 on an older machine I haven’t updated in a few months and, below, what I have currently in my dev build, which is a scaled back 1.0.0.7. These also show the same weather type. The older shot actually looks brighter and has hot-spots on the ground near the character. Make of it what you will but I don’t think the ground textures look as good either.
I think the before posted earlier in the thread are from different weather types, where in the “before” shot, it’s an overcast weather type with darker light modifier.
Here we go - I went back and got a shot in my current build where it changed to the darker weather pattern that was captured in the earlier “before” shot. So a lot of the difference people are commenting between those earlier shots is partially due to the weather and not actual changes between builds.
Hmmm, not seeing the pics Med,
EDIT: Nevermind there they are.
I reckon your doing good work mate, looking forward to seeing the new graphics tweaks once you’ve had a good holiday.
And keep up the good work squishing bugs, it’ll always turn out for the best in the end.
Cheers!!
Also, in terms of the texture changes, I think part of the complaint of loss of detail comes from the change in the dry grass texture. In the 1.0.0.6 screenshot of that ledge, the old dry grass texture is very pronounced and the details of it seem to stand out. Really though, that texture looks like total garbage if you actually looked closely at it. (I can say that because I made it).
The new texture looks a lot better imo but the details don’t stand out as obviously when the camera is pulled out because it’s a higher resolution texture with finer details. Here they are for comparison - old on top, new on bottom.
The new texture does seem to have more detail from this close, but it looks like a lot less grass, if that makes sense. Sort of desert-ish.
Medierra, will we have the old, 1.0.0.6. camera angle in the next hotfix? Zantai claims this hotfix brought back the old angle, is there any plan on changing it again? Someone claimed, I agree, that the new angle was contributing to the unnatural look.
I dont know but i still like how it was at 10 0 6 a very good approach to change things but im very picky with atmosphere .thanks med for sitting down and explaining all these
Yeah, I can see that now. I didn’t realize weather patterns would have a strong effect like that. The time of day might have been different too, I don’t know. I wasn’t trying to trick anybody. I just looked at existing screenshots I had in my folder and tried to make a side-by-side.
That’s what it is. The clumps of grass in the old texture were bigger and greener. Not that we really need big green clumps of grass in such a dry environment, but as others have said it gave the illusion of more detail. The reduction of green/yellow on the ground may also be why many people are saying Act 2 has this pinkish cast.
Alright, sounds good, and looks ok from the pictures as well. Thanks for the blow-by-blow. Enjoy the holidays.
sigh Almost everyone who wants the old look back is asking for an option. There is no need to justify the new changes. Just please give us an OPTION for the old look back. Make every change to your heart’s content.
And about the water. The weather doesn’t have anything to do with the look. EVERY time I have passed by water in the old look it has looked closer to the first of a screenshot comparison shown earlier in the thread. Now it always looks “2005” EVERY time I pass by water. It has nothing to do with weather.
That’s good to know. All I saw was a lot of detail in that “before” screen shot and much less in the after. You have to admit the difference in those two screen shots is pretty stark. In that before, you can see details, reflections, and so on; in the second, due to the fog, you cannot. I thought these two shots were completely comparable; turns out they were not. Thanks for clearing that up!
Yeah, I didn’t think you were intentionally trying to trick anyone. Given that you can’t just fire up the old build and take a new screenshot, you probably had to dig around for one and had no idea what the time of day or weather was when it was taken. I wanted to point out though that I think some of the assumptions about changes that people drew from looking at those two shots was based more on weather and time of day than actual graphics changes. I mean, yeah, there were significant changes to some things but others, like the water and fog haven’t been touched.
I think probably the water looks better when there is no fog and the sunlight is hitting it at the right angle. However, as a whole scene / environment, it’s a give and take trying to balance it to get the best overall look. Since there is little water in that location, it wouldn’t make sense to balance the entire scene around making the water look best and we’d have to eliminate day/night cycle too, if we wanted to ensure the water always looked perfect.
