I picked up Grim Dawn a few months ago and I’m loving this game. I had been coming to the (old) forums periodically to look for answers to various mechanics questions, and decided I should go ahead and create an account and say “hello”.
I’ve playing ARPGs since Diablo I, and I had given up hope for the genre after the Diablo III real-money-auction-house debacle. The gaming industry in general has taken a real nose during the last 10 years with micro-transactions, cash shops, games released in an alpha state with ongoing “day 1 patches” for years, the games as a “service” business model, pay2win and pay-for-convenience game design, etc, etc, etc.
I had given up hope for gaming in general and certainly ARPGs. Recently however I found myself craving an ARPG dungeon crawling experience. I narrowed the candidates down to Grim Dawn and Path of Exile.
I chose POE and was very underwhelmed. I remember reviewing the game for my wife and listing what i perceived as all the problems. I told her i just wished there was an ARPG that let you do “x”, “y” and “z”.
A few months later I decided to give Grim Dawn a shot and I was blown away. Literally, the things I had described on my wish list was exactly the game-play experience Grim Dawn delivered.
Anyway, I’ve been having a blast playing since then and just wanted to say so.
Thank you for saving the ARPG genre and delivering a complete PC game in an era where game design is defined by fueling the micro-transaction “free-to-play” games as a service business model.
