I’ve had a bit of a thought cross my mind regarding damage sources/types. I was wondering how members of the community go about figuring out which damage types comes from which enemies. I know it might seem a silly question, but what do you guys find is the easiest way to figure this out?
When you take DoT damage, you can briefly see what damage type you are taking, and sometimes it’s just blatantly obvious (e.g. when you get hit by fire, it’s obviously fire damage). But other times, it’s not so obvious. For example, vitality and chaos damage can often look quite similar. And heroes and bosses can sometimes have attacks that have different colours/styles than regular enemies, which I personally find can obfuscate the source of the damage.
One way to do it would be to simply increase/decrease certain resistance types on your character and observe the results. Has anyone gone to this amount of trouble? Is there an easier way to source this info, for example - through the game’s files/database?
I’m not sure how this would work in-game. Maybe a bestiary could be added for every hero/boss the player kills? Even then, certain enemies can deal different types of damage depending on which weapons they spawn with.
Honestly, if you play the game enough you’ll get used to the colors. The sound effects are just as important for determining which damage you’re taking
I reckon I’ve played my fair share (over 600 hours now) and have a fairly good idea of what’s going on in most cases. I feel like I implicitly know what’s happening with damage sources most of the time, but not always.
A bestiary is kind of what I was hinting at with my post, as it’s something I’d like to contribute to in some way. Not necessarily in-game, but maybe on the wiki, forum posts or even video content
I can totally take my ‘best guess’ based on my observations so far, but nor do I want to mislead my fellow players. Hence, I’m looking for the most accurate way to determine this sort of thing. Particularly with bosses, it’d be a great resource on “gearing up” if someone is struggling to conquer a foe
