Fangs of Asterkarn Development Update - June 2025

Grim Dawn is taking off, rising, and soaring high, as Z himself said, the sky is the limit. This new DLC, with so many things it will have in it, is already looking like GD2 in size. The comments are already resonating on a grand scale on social media, and this makes me very happy. I swear, I’m celebrating with a nice bottle of whisky hahaha LONG LIVE Grim Dawn.

Are we perhaps exaggerating? I started on video games back in the 80’s with Super Mario. As time marched on here’s a taste of how it went: Get that super rad copy of Nintendo Power. Thumb thru the pages getting giddy at all the little snippets of games that were on the way. Sometimes it was maybe a paragraph or two about some game and a small graphic or screen. That’s it. Now fast forward 2 years or so before you heard anything else about it. Tubular dude. Only one game took over 10 years to “show up”. That was Diablo 3. And it was not a game that had been teased or worked on for 10 years in totality by any sense.

I’ll be interested to know what games have been taking between 10 and 20 years followed by a further 5-7 years for fixes. Dwarf Fortress doesn’t count. And lets take a moment to remember a very important fact - NES games average about 100-200 kilobytes of data. Now compare that to todays games, in their glorious 3D worlds, with all their high quality graphics and sound. Damn right buddy, games are going to take a little bit longer. They are also going to require more people to make these games. In some cases it takes hundreds of people working on them to have any hope of reasonable timeframe for release.

Games still don’t always take 10-20 years to come out. There are more games now than ever, and not only do they release more frequently but there are way more that can be played in early stages of development.

That said, I have been waiting 6+ years for Hollow Knight:Silksong (supposedly releasing 2025), and 13+ years for Mewgenics (supposedly releasing 2025). I will probably never see Eitr, as that one just disappeared years ago (the fate of the overwhelming majority of software projects is failure).

I would like to see them all released, I may wish to see them sooner rather than later, but it seems to me incorrect to ever say that these are “taking too long”. I cannot know how long they should take! I cannot make them! They can only be made by the people working on them!

But they have not received money from me, there is no contract, there are no promises, I am not owed.

The aging engine that Bethesda has been using is like beating a dead horse for 20+ years. Same with the engine that runs World of Warcraft. The only difference between the two is that Blizzard refines the games and Bethesda hopes that their games are fixed by modders.

I love the graphical aesthetics of this game. Reminds me of the original Total Annihilation (Cave Dog) and the first Supreme Commander; before Squenix destroyed the 2nd game.

It would be best if it could be released in 2025, because people have been looking forward to it for too long. Before I played Grim Dawn, I thought there would be a replacement for it, but the reality is that there is no replacement. Although it is made with an old engine, its charm lies in its inner qualities rather than its appearance. It is my favorite game

Whatever you guys do, its gonna be awesome ! Take your time !
If i can suggest or wish any two things for FOA its the following:

  1. make shrines and devotions points rare again! With two expansions allready there are way too many shrines imo. You easily get all devotion points after two playthroughs, which gives less motivation in the 3. playthrough. Not to mention, its never really worth, doing the hard shrines which require a quest of some kind. So i suggest either limit the amount of shrines, and/ or rise the max amount of devotion points (which would require a complete rebalance of the devotions system - i know). I wanna be motivated again, to collect all shrines in the game and not just like 70% of them.

  2. I asume there will be a new class … please give us some kind of shapeshifter. That would be awesome! Like a wherewolf and/or -bear or so.

Thats it. Thanks for your awesome work !

We’ll probably get some more shrines in FoA too.

Thank you, was about to comment this myself. It’s essentially the same size, not twice as big, which is quite a difference. Still no complaints, AoM’s middle section was already almost too long (the forest area into more forest into a marsh was a bit samey when exploring the entire map the first time around). So I think you shouldn’t go much bigger than AoM for an expansion.

This is probably the main thing, together with the easy access to advertisement (social media). In the old day you wouldn’t know any game would come out unless you went and look for it. Maybe some advertisement came with another game that you bought (like some screenshots or maybe even a demo!). You just didn’t know till something came upon your path, usually when it’s already released.
These days you know before they properly start work on it, and then it seems to take forever. Making a game isn’t an easy task, especially if they’re more complex or have bigger worlds.

Anyway, the point is: You know about more games in development than you did in the past, you know more about it (constant blog posts) and while they may take a bit longer to make, it mainly feels longer because you’re waiting for it.

That is by design. They changed it so casual players who only play the story or stay on normal can get quite far in terms of devotion, and people who want to rush to Ultimate and/or only play the difficult sections, for which ingame items and tools now exist to rush there, can also complete most of their build without having to do lower difficulties.
The higher difficulties are also not really to do quests again, but for the fun of optimising your build and grinding for new items. It’s an ARPG, not a (C)RPG that’s meant to have an incentive to redo quests multiple times for different narrative outcomes or alternative ways of doing them.

I asume there will be a new class … please give us some kind of shapeshifter. That would be awesome! Like a wherewolf and/or -bear or so.

The new class is already decided and revealed, no way they would change that now… but you’re extremely lucky lol, because that is exactly what the new class is all about.

Oh thats awesome, cant wait !

But i disagree regarding the devotions shrines. If you dont bother playing all three difficulties, you dont get to max level and you dont get BIS equipment. So i think you shouldnt get 100% of devotion either. Maby 80% till end of 2. difficulty. But not 100% that easy. And thats the way it was in the base-game. But every addon gave more shrines and now i feel like its just to easy to complete it. Massive grinding shouldnt be necessary. But at least hitting max difficulty and maby doing one or anothet shrine-quest.
But thats just my opinion (as a casual player).

They were never rare to begin with.

Well, we do have a lot of shrines now compared to what we used to have. Base game 59 total, add in AoM and that went up to 73. FG increased massively to 157 and 3 more have been added since making 160.

Ha, exactly the same here!

Hmm… if you just play ultimate you do get almost max level (easily with some extra effort). And you can get 100% of the devotion points by clearing ALL the shrines ok and there’s two extra secrets iirc. I think that’s fair. Especially since veteran is so easy these days.

Greetings, I have all the Crate expansions and games, and Grim Dawn is my favorite.
Regarding the development time for their third expansion, I think it’s fine to take as long as it takes.
What I’d like to know is if the engine will undergo any major changes to use the latest technologies or improve textures, lighting effects, etc.
Ray tracing support, Dlss FSR. I really liked the DirectX improvements they made at the time, and the game has changed a lot. A surprise in terms of graphics would be great!
Please excuse my poor English. Good luck with the development of all your projects. I wish you the best!

The Grim Dawn engine cannot utilize those technologies without significant fundamental changes, which is why it is ultimately getting retired after Fangs of Asterkarn.

We have developed a new engine internally that takes advantage of modern tech without being saddled with 20 years of bloat, which will power our upcoming RTS, and Grim Dawn 2 beyond it.

Would leave 10 ‘likes’ on previous post if I could. ‘Developed’ seems to indicate that the new engine is already in existence. Please make it be so that GD2 (early access) will be within 5 years. Am 60 now and I want GD2 to beat my date with the grave.

Hang in there!

You probably got another 30 years or so, should be ok
