I’m after the strange key and ancient hearts. Been farming for ages and neither are dropping.

I’m forming a supposition that they will not drop of mobs I cannot gain experience from in the same way that aether crystals are not dropped by formations that are too low level. Is that right?

Any tips on where to farm?

Strange Key drops from Bloodsworn/Chtonians in Act1. Sometimes you have to restart game several times before one drops.
Also, you can receive it as quest reward (if you take proper dialogue branch). Quest can be started in Burwitch Ourskirts, by finding a specific quest item.

Ancient Hearts drop from any beast/beastkin/insect boss. You can even ask Anasteria for that, when you receive her first quest.
You can also trade your Blood of Chton and Tainted Brain Matter for Ancient Hearts (or vice versa. Blacksmith in Necropolis can perform it.

And yes, they cant drop if you severely outlevel your enemies.

I lost hope for the strange key and just inserted it with an editor. No luck in ultimate for like 3 hours. Kinda lame if you think about it that you can get it once in normal per questnote …

In terms of ancient hearts you can transmute them I think in the Gates of Necropolis there was a smith to transform ancient hearts, brains and blood of cthon into each other. So if you got a surplus of the other rare materials you can just transmorph them into ancient hearts.

Ancient Heart also drops from beast/beastkin/insect heroes (though rate is fairly low), from Treasure Troves (very high rate) and from dismantling epic/legendary items, sometimes.

The best way to get them is to farm Treasure Trove in Shrine of the Forgotten God.

Treasure Trove is the best way to farm Hearts
And you can get Dynamite easily from Cronley’s Hideout:p

You have to love RNG. 21 runs of the little area around where the door is (opened by the key) and nothing. I post this and two mins later.
