I’ve noticed the counter for flattening is no longer attached to the area being flattened but is sort of floating well below it.

I’ve noticed the same thing, and also during construction of farm fields.
Coordinates where the counter is displayed seem to be set deep underground rather than on the surface (at the center of the selected area).
As a result, the counter, pause icon, and priority icon appear smaller than other icons displayed on the surface.
I’ve seen this, too, except for a few times when it seemed to have picked some other, inexplicably higher, point.
In any event, this is more of a bug report thing than a feedback.
