Fire Strike - is it ever useful for melee?

Devotions can proc on any individual hit from an AoE. This means that if you have a Devotion assigned to Fire Strike and Fire Strike hits 4 people (be it from Explosive Strike or a WPS behind the scenes) that Devotion will get 4 chances to proc. This is not the case with WPS, in that Explosive Strike hitting 4 people does not give you 4 chances to proc a WPS.

Finally,

Just remember that 25% chance on four hits does not equal 100%. It’s still 25%, just on 4 seperate occasions.

Yes Ceno, thank you for clarifying. WPS has a chance to proc per attack. Devotions and ‘chance on attack’ skills have a chance to proc per target. And yes, 4 chances at 25% is not 100%, but we’re splitting hairs - over time it will get close.

A bit unrelated question but what devotion would you assign to Fire Strike on a dual-wielding ranged build among this three: Ulzuin’s Torch, Eldtrich Flame or Elemental storm?

Ok I should clarify - Devotion procs ‘chance on attack’ scales with number of targets hit by the skill it’s bound to.

So if you assign Bull Rush to Fire Strike and you have Explosive Strike (which has AoE) and that attack hits 4 targets, it’s a near 100% chance to proc Bull Rush.

You’ll see a noticeable difference when whacking one target vs. several at a time.

You can also see this with a dot AoE + no cooldown proc. Example: Grasping Vines + Imp/Aetherfire (15% chance on attack, no cooldown). If you hit multiple targets (very easy with this skill due to its radius), you’ll notice Aetherfire going off several times from a single cast.

Check this out, around 1:58 you’ll see a single cast with multiple procs: https://youtu.be/lEXisyY37ns?t=1m55s (another example with PRM). Procs 3 times with a single cast (looks like the ‘attack check’ occurs with every target/pierce).

Be advised that only on shotgun skills (with multiple fragments, blades, etc) one cast can result in multiple devotion procs in same time. Dot based skills can proc it with every DOT tick, but not more than once in same time.

Might be wrong but whichever one has the lowest cooldown or no cooldown.

I’d go with elemental storm. EF spreads so you don’t need it proccing that often. personal opinion of course.

How do I proc EF tho? It’s for upclose and personal battles with bosses, and it only has 15% to proc and it is centered around a hero with a little radius.
