Basically, on November 14, firefox V57 will be released, (currently in nightly builds) However, from this point on, all XML based addons WILL CEASE TO FUNCTION!!!
Basically, web extension addons will be supported from here on in. So what does this mean? well, from sources I read, addon writers like no script are having a bit of a job moving to this new standard, (this is especially true for addblocker plus) due to the differences in the standards. Which also means, unless the addon does get updated, it will no longer function, but here is the problem, firefox has loads of addons and most probably will not get updated due to the hassle involved in updating the scripts.
addblocker plus and no script are in the process of getting updated, but plenty won’t be. so if you have a heavy modded firefox, then expect many of the scripts to no longer work and might have a job of finding replacements.
Um, been considering switching from my old IE10 to Firefox, but I like AdBlocker so that’s another point for hanging on to IE10.
Btw anyone know how to get rid of multiple tabs in Firefox? I hate having more than one tab open at a time (one of the reasons I didn’t update to IE11 and not yet to Firefox). What I’m talking about is getting rid of the + icon. Can’t find anything in their options that let’s me do it.
You should right click on the bar then click on customise then drag the + sign off, and like I said, there is addblocker plus for firefox, and that like I said is getting updated for the web extension framework. As is no script is is a script blocker, and pretty useful.
I don’t have many addons, but for those that do, the above changes will be annoying at least, (converting and finding replacements for addons)
Cheers for the info, just a shame that Mozilla started before next month, half of my addons are now marked legacy and some have stopped working, or only partial work. No Script is only semi working, in the most annoying way going, it still blocks and works, but the icons for it and messages about blocked content have vanished and cannot be shown, there’s no way I could find to allow what I wanted without disabling No Script totally…really don’t like having scripts running everywhere.
They started I think five or six weeks ago, to give people plenty of time to switch. Had to look for a few replacements myself (RIP self destructing cookies, I loved that one) but there’s enough out there.
Who the hell at Mozilla thought this was a good idea? As Firefox’s numerous addons and ease of creating them was one of the big draw cards for the browser.
They probably took a look at the rapidly declining market share and said “if it works for google, it works for us”. And then they implemented it sort of badly and here we are.
Yeah, I got an e-mail about Firefox Quantum yesterday. Had a quick look, but not completely convinced yet. Will do some more snooping before I download it.
Just been updated to it…and it’s bloody horrible. Killed almost all addons, killed my themes and the new tab with the pinned pages now only shows fraction of the sites previously pinned even with “both rows” enabled.
Very simply I’m going back to the last build before this and turning off all updates…:furious::furious:
I have it updated too, also not really keen, noscript still not ready yet. (maybe the end of the week) It killed all the previous addons, because they moved to web extension format. So many addons don’t work. But yeah, themes are basic, I wish they would allow more customisation like the old days.
I think the update is hit and miss, and I really don’t think firefox will be that popular from here on in.
So not that keen, but it is certainly fast!!! and that is something, just not sure if the trade offs are really worth it mind.
it depends on the addons, like I originally posted, the old addon format has been dropped and replaced by web extensions. For some addons like noscript this has taken a long time to port over, due to the huge amount of differences between the two formats. Also while some addons have been ported over, a lot haven’t. So it depends on the addons and if the authors of those addons do the work.
You probably got addons that are already V57 ready, but many aren’t.
I admit, FF is fast, but not sure if the upgrade is worthwhile. I will stick with it for a bit more, or I might also downgrade, but my main addon I’m waiting for is noscript, and while that will be support for 56 and below for a bit, the new version that is coming will at some point be the only supported version.
So once noscript is ready, I will be a lot happier.
Then you’re very lucky aren’t you. I’m with matthewfarmery, not having noscript is a security risk unless you only ever view trusted webpages, and the new tab page is missing over a 1/3 of the previously shown pinned tabs and will not display them, so that’s another step backwards and away from useability.
Edit…going to see how much can be tweaked in about:config
