First Character: Help with 2h ranged fire strike commando

Hello everyone! Just got into the game not too long ago. I’ve been a big fan of ARPGs, it’s just so satisfying to grind with incremental gear/stat improvements.

That being said, I started my first character! It’s currently a level 33 demolitionist, but I’d like it to be a commando one day. Preferably a tanky, 2h ranged fire strike commando.

However, I’ve been slowly learning the ropes, and I’m wondering whether I should be putting points into certain skills. I know I’m supposed to focus on one to two types of damage, so I decided not to put anything in static strike. But now I’m afraid I’m branching out because I’ve also been putting points into skills that boost physical damage, like temper.

Here is my build so far: https://www.grimtools.com/calc/gZw6nDkV

Am I doing things correctly?

Also, when should I start branching into soldier skills? Are there other demo skills that I should consider?

Thank you for all of your help, everyone! I appreciate the help from the community.

Gear tip: good rolled greens > blues

Take Inquisitor, more suited for ranged and there are also plenty of beginner friendly guides about ranged Purifier that will help you learn more about the game

It’s better to take either Inquisitor (WPS, Aura of Censure, Seal, Word of Renewal) or Oathkeeper as second mastery for 2h ranged fire build, Soldier is not that good for that.

Hi,

on the lower levels you can do whatever and it should die with fire strike although in the long run you should invest in resistance reduction(RR). Also no point in investing in temper just keep flame touched maxed. invest in flash bang for example you will crit more often. Also a second class could be for example inquisitor then you have another RR source from Aura of Censure also some other useful skills.

sources of RR for fire damage

devotions:
soleals witchblade
rhowans crown
ultos
viper

skills:
thermite mines

Are you married to the idea of a 2H build? If you want to go for a tankier route there are a bunch of shields with range specific bonuses. For that, going Oathkeeper as your secondary mastery is probably your best option.
Personally I believe Oathkeeper + Inquisitor might be a tad better but Demolitionist is certainly fine.

Alternatively as others have suggested, Demolitionist + Inquisitor is good too and would probably be better suited for a 2H build.

Equipment:
Get a better belt. Literally anything. Just pick up some magic belt from a vendor for the moment.
Put components on all your gear, when you replace it with new gear you can destroy it and get the components back. Though epic and legendary gear is most of the time worth keeping for alts. Enchanted Flint is one of the best weapon component options for you.

Skills & Attributes:
Get Brimstone ASAP, maybe even drop a few points from Flame Touched and Temper to reach it faster.
Get a casual point in Vindictive Flame for its 3% total speed and one in Ulzuin’s Wrath because its an easy way to reduce enemy DPS a tad. Static Strike is also worth at least a casual point.
Consider points in Thermite Mine for its resistance reduction effect.
Only put the minimum amount of attribute points into cunning and spirit so that you can equip gear it’s needed for. Everything else into physique for more health and defensive ability.

Devotions:
It seems like you might be aiming for Solael’s Witchblade, this is a good choice. If you’re going for a 2H build you should absolutely get Kraken as well.
Rhowan’s Crown is a good source of resistance reduction and Viper is easily accessible, grants 20% elemental RR and gives 3% Offensive Ability both of which are very nice.

Note: Only resistance reduction which says -X% stacks, stuff like Viper with 20% reduced target’s elemental resistance and Rhowan’s Crown which says 32 reduced target’s elemental resistance do not stack with other sources that uses the same wording. In those cases the strongest effect will override the weaker ones (but Viper and Rhowan stack since one is ‘flat’ and the other a percentage).

Thank you for the feedback everyone! All very helpful!

Yes, I am very fond of 2h ranged weapons opposed to dual wielding pistols.

I was able to get my hands on some better gear. And I removed all of my points in temper to progress towards Brimstone.

I’m considering going towards the purifier route now rather than commando.

In regards to gear, what should I focus on? Am I looking for anything that would give me a DPS boost or increase the damage of my fire strike? There are some items that I have come across that have higher fire damage, but decreases the attack of my fire strike. I don’t entirely understand why that is.

Again, thank you for your help!
