Food problem

I have 143 people but I can not feed them, this is what I have;

12 farmers
3 fishers
6 forgers
1 herder
3 hunters
2 arborist
2 smoker
2 grocers

8 cattle

Fields

Field 1 crop rotation 5x5
peas, carrots
flax, flax
wheat, clover

Field 2 crop rotation 5x5
beans, beats
flax, flax
wheat, farmer

Field 3 crop rotation 5x5
peas, carrots
beats, clover, farmer
flax, flax

Field 4 crop rotation 5x5
farmer, peas, beats
cabbage, cabbage
carrots, clover

Field 5 crop rotation 5x10
corn, clover
farmer, peas, peas
beans, flax

Field 6 crop rotation 5x10
farmer, beans
leeks, buckweat
wheat, clover

Field 7 crop rotation 5x10 (in progress)

Suggestion on improvements, and how do I get them happy with food. The graphs say they there is enough but apparently not. I in the 20th year and year two with the cattle.

Your fields are completely depleted and not replenishing nearly enough fertility back. No clover at all on field #2. I recommend giving the wiki farming guide a read: Farming - Farthest Frontier

also you need more hunters I think I have 10 atm and only 4 fields and I’m getting more food than you for 252 people.

Just add more beans. They both:
a) generate food
b) increase fertility

higher fertility = more food.

Unless you’re at the point where you’re conserving food, I am not sure there is any reason to grow any food other than beans.

Peas too, they’re also good for fertility.

Also think about constructing a school. You have too many people just “eating” and doing nothing.
Have to instruct them and prepare to work.
My population is around 250 and at least 170 of them are ready-to-work people.

I meant it more as beans (food group) but yeah beans & peas.

So do not grow wheat? What about the peps need for two food types? What about flax and beer (not there yet)?

Buckwheat helps with weed suppression and also provides grain. And yes, you can grow flax, but don’t make it every year. My rotation is peas/flax, then clover/buckwheat then field maintenance/beans.

Thank you to all.

1 smoker for all that meat/fish? :open_mouth:

Firstly one smoker is not enough, most of you’re meat and fish will spoil before you reach the winter.
Their is a building to conserve you’re fruit, otherwise it spoils halfway the winter.

I’m surprised you’re farmers aren’t dead from shock, you need to put way more clover on the field. and maximum of one crop with a serious impact on the fertility.
I’ve tried this one: please note, I’ve got only 91 people in this game play (tier 2), so I haven’t planted wheat yet.

Important: this is in the hard environment (wasteland).
It’s important that the fertility is going up, you need to have clover in every cyclus and one maintenance.

I have two.

Alternatively, I have “spare fields” that only grow clover until a field in use drops or gets infected, then I swap / duplicate to that one, and grow clover in the one that went down or was infected. Different way to go about it, but cuts down on having to micro manage the crops due to the constant crop infections and makes sure I always have the right mix of stuff growing.

The one thing that may throw you off is, the recommended farmer count will be almost double what is really needed, as clover is low maintenance.

Oh, you should still minimize the fertility drop and not try to grow wheat 3 years straight regardless.

Two isn’t close to enough. If placed properly with minimal travel time they making about 400ish per year. You should never have any meat spoiling, if you do then you don’t have enough smokers. 143 people… I’d usually have 4-6 smokers by that point. Especially once you start slaughtering 1-4 cows per year, then you have to increase it even more. Take your total meat/fish production and divide by 400 and round up one. That’s how many smokers it usually takes.

The diseases aren’t an issue. If the new year their isn’t anything for the disease. It just disappears in the new year, because it lost it’s host.

Make sure when you place down your “fisherman” that you then move the “work circle” to better use the “area” this will improve fish yield. I had 4 smokers back when I had 200 people just trying to keep up. Also 5 x 5 fields are pretty small. My rotation is 1. turnups, clover, Worker 2. Peas, Wheat 3. Peas, Clover. You can then switch out with flax on different crop plots.

I make my Crop plots as big as I can.

My City is at 580+ Pop now and I have 7 Max sized crops 5 barns and supplement food with the trader if needed ( which it is some times ) Don’t forget to make your bakery and cheese factories  Also don’t forget to “Milk” those cows.

Thank you for that tip, it changed how I populate my fields and now I never worry about disease at all, it affects one crop and goes away every time now!

have already said a lot of rotation methods above, I recommend that the size of the field be built to 8 * 9 at a time, so that only 3 farmers are needed, remember, it must be a one-time, expansion needs more farmers, if you need to expand, delete the farmland and rebuild

don’t forget extra farmers needed for apiaries :honeybee:
