you can facetank him, and physique pump isn’t necessarily gonna save someone on the hits, because the caveat with physique is it just increases hp and DA, so if you still have shit armour/phys res/actual dmg mitigation a hit can still hurt regardless of your physique
*also even if you happen to have pumped enough to become uncritable, that’s why to go for actual mitigation and not just rely on physique for defence other than additional stat bumps - physique is a good bonus, not your first or second line of defence
That is to say don’t think pumping physique necessarily will save your butt/will save you on its own, otherwise that butt might still get sore
Worth mentioning Voldrak always has his MI equipped now, drastically varying how hard he hits. Hits hard in the first place, if the MI roles two physical affixes his damage goes through the roof.
I think most people know this by now, but didn’t see it explicitly said in this thread.
Even with Item Assistant listing 100K items for me I still can’t equip well enough to facetank Voldrak. If I don’t kite him I die. Perhaps with a Soldier build if I equip and select the proper skills/abilities, idk. Maybe there’s some detail that I’m still overlooking.
without GT links it’s impossible to say what the specific issue might be
the game has multiple defensive layers, some more vital than others, and some impacting things in more direct or indirect/rng ways.
If you’re fighting an enemy dealing 100% physical dmg with 0 armour rating and physical resist, but otherwise lots of DA or decent HP that might then be an “obvious” factor, (like fighting a pure chaos boss but with low chaos res)
If you have a build with on appearance seemingly fine defensive stats, res covered, not horrible da armour hp; but somewhere along the lines we forgot about healing, so trying to rely just on a single HP potion every 12 seconds, that can be a different one.
And ofc there’s always going to be stuff that even on the same boss that just might hit different than everything else, easy example is Aleks meteor attack, “obv avoid”, for Voldrak you have his slow windup overhead slam that might require different/additional defensive or sustain considerations than his otherwise 98% of attacks.
TLDR, with the various layers/fight interactions kept in mind, any char/class can be made to facetank Voldrak (soldier not being a strict requirement that is).
In the end he’s just a campaign boss, designed to get by with regular means and not some extreme pass fail build weed-out’er like ex Calla or Ravager/superbosses devs don’t want you to kill
While I don’t disagree on the Overhead slam being easily avoidable, with a decent roll on his weapon, Voldrak’s sideswipe can easily hit for up to 8-9k on ultimate. If he gets a weapon with chance to roll +flat physical, he can be very deadly.
He’s just not worth the gamble on Ultimate, but thankfully most builds have a way to deal with him. Either through range or just by popping an Aether Cluster.
speaking from the perspective of always fighting him on melees, would never even consider using a cluster on this, so
there’s simply just something missing if you feel that necessity, imo, *and i’ve had him roll primo phys affixes too yes, also before phys dmg nerfs
by that i’m saying/reiterating the game is giving you the tools to deal with this/handle this boss, and doesnt’ force a certain requirement like class/Soldier to be melee capable. Devs arent’ that mean to ditch things like that
All his attacks are pretty slow and can easily be avoided with any movement skill. Not saying he never killed me, but it’s one of the easier boss-figures to evade the attacks from imho. Even if you’re low level on ultimate, it’s doable. (just needs more evading )
I specifically mentioned his sideswipe. That’s an almost instant attack.
While no one should be getting hit by either the shockwave or the overhead slam, his regular attacks are much harder to avoid while as melee.
