Geraitric Game Players

Well done Crate!.

You have brought back the power of the PC game to where it belongs - ON the PC and OFF the consoles.

I am a very active 61 year old PC gamer and developer that has been around since the likes of “Dune II”, “Command and Conquer”, “Wing Commander” and “Diablo I” to name a few of many.

I have noticed that the current trend of “DUMBING” down new and reworked games to accommodate the CONSOLE gaming community has been eroding the richness and complexity of games and strategy that we used to have years ago.

Now you have - flashy graphics - nice combat - 10 to 15 minutes and the session is over.

Looks awesome but - mindless, boring and limited replay value

I played Diablo II extensively for years, and like others eagerly awaited the launch of Diablo 3. During that period I came across an RPG called Titan Quest by Ironlore and was BLOWN AWAY. This to me could have almost been called Diablo 3 and actually was so good that it replaced Diablo II for me.

Diablo 3 eventually came out and was disappointing at first, but slowly became more playable, although straying away from the mechanics of what we were used to in Diablo II (Commercial pressure from the CONSOLE world?).

I have just purchased Grim Dawn and am busy playing single and multi-play with friends and can only compliment you on the product so far. I have played EVERY single dual combo character in Titan Quest and look forward to doing the same in Grim Dawn.

I am still a very active Diablo 3 player as it does have a certain visual and flashy appeal, but Grim Dawn looks like it will hold my attention and will become my focus in the future.

I think there is place for BOTH type of game scenarios in this modern world …

Today’s gamers like to login, play a few fast furious session and then logout. Starcraft is an example that used to take hours of planning and strategy, now matches are over in about a fast and furious 5 to 15 minutes. We have played many Starcraft LAN sessions that took hours to get a victory and were memorable and enjoyable experiences.

Us oldies like to take our time and plan our strategy and character progression without being heckled when you stop to pick up and examine an item. What is the rush - lol. Grim Dawn allows you to do exactly this with zero pressure from speed freaks and trolls in a multi-play game amongst friends.

Communication tools like TeamSpeak etc., make Grim Dawn a great multi-play experience. “Take the time to look around and communicate with your party”

As I said there is place for BOTH PC and CONSOLE games, so please don’t flame me for being anti-console, my preference is for for depth in strategy and progression that only PC only games can provide. Have a look at game in development called “Star Citizen” by Chris Roberts (remember Wing Commander?)

Keep on developing the way you are and you may well become the “Diablo IV” expectation on the PC platform that the original RPG gamers wanted in the first place.

It is going back many years now, but your developers from the old Diablo II and Ironlore companies are ROCKING at the moment.

Looking forward to game updates.

Hi Mike,
Glad to have players of all ages enjoying Grim Dawn! I’m sure even if devs don’t respond, they’re very appreciative of posts like these.

I’m “just” 34 and i played most of the games you mentioned, so either you younger than you think or i’m older than my 34. Hope it is the 1st.

Anyway i love GD as well the only thing i can rant about it is the silly treasure trove chest mechanic added today but i’m confident they will fix it.

You taking suggestions? Try Battle Brothers, it’s an indie strategy turn based sandbox rpg, it’s not getting the praise it deserves.

hey mike welcome to the forums

I am gald you are enjoying GD. Even though im a young’n in your eyes (26), i still feel the same way as you do.

in short i cant count the amount of people i know who are like ohh shit you see those graphics and then they play the game and its like umm this is boring as hell and takes no thought what so ever. Ohh well to each his own, at least we have a great game to play

Hi Mike!

I am a 43 year old gamer and I totally agree with you. Games have been increasingly dumbing down, creating flashy adventures, but seems that devs are just too afraid to ask gamers to put some effort into games.

I love it when a game like Grim Dawn take its time to develop and deliver a so called “old school” game.

As of late I have been getting sick of all the AAA games like COD that capitalize in big actors and super flashy graphics, but the lack of interesting and profound gameplay make me turn to indies, which in contrast, are doing super interesting experiences and are willing to try.

Now we have marvels like Stardew Valley or Grim Dawn that respect their art and create pretty amazing games where you can spend hundreds of hours without noticing.

Thank you for bringing this up. And keep on gaming!

Thanx,
Had a look at Battle Brothers. Gonna download an give it a go. Looks like a “Kings Bounty” sort of style game with HEX squares movable by turns which I also enjoy as you can play while working as it does not take 100% of your attention. Great while monitoring software rebuilds or Disaster Recover exercises. The old Turn-Base system also reminds me of another series that got destroyed. Remember “XCOM”? I purchased the latest one and finished it in within a week. The old one’s took months and months and the research trees were so diverse. Once again, it looked good, too simple, too short, oh dear - lol
