I am a returning player, don’t have AoM expansion (I do have crucible though). When I am looking into the build compendium, it tells players without AoM to check the Build Compendium V, but the builds in there are mostly from around patch 1.0.1.0.
Do these builds still hold up? I am guessing they don’t quite, since a lot of changes happened since, I read into all the patch notes since but it is a bit much at once and very cumbersome with the 5 patches in between then and now.
My question ultimately is, where can vanilla players turn for guides? Is build compendium V up to date or not?
You won’t find any up to date quality guides for vanilla.
1.0.1.0 builds should still work, more or less.
Builds in Compendium V should still work fine, some might need a few minor tweaks. If you have any questions on a specific build, you can post in the topic and someone in the community should be able to answer or help you out.

Are there any general trends to be aware of? Like, tankiness seems to be the way to go for crucible, any damage types that got gutted over time?
I liked bleed builds back in the day, I read they got nerfed quite a bit (especially without access to the Blood Knight set from the expansion I would guess), or are they still viable?
Bleed Warder and Witchblade were both strong pre-expansion and I don’t believe either one received any notable nerfs since then.
