Hardcore Perspective: Please Buff 2-Handed Weapons

So as many of you may or may not know, I’ve written a Hardcore guide, and I’ve played a lot of Hardcore generally. I’ve taken a lot of suggestions and talked with many of my friends, many of whom also exclusively play Hardcore, and one of the most frustrating things we’ve talked about the game between us is about 2-handed weapons. See, I love 2-handed weapons, they’re so utterly satisfying to use with both their animations as well as the sick thud you hear when they slam down. This includes ranged 2-handed weapons as well! I have both an Obsidian Juggernaut Cadence build and Vortex of Souls build that I’ve been working on for quite some time - trying to get just right - and at some point in the future I hope to write up a thread about one (or both) of them. However, that isn’t looking like it’s going to happen soon since the builds, comparatively to virtually every other good build right now, are complete trash. Commandos, Spellbreakers, and even DaShiv’s silly fire pet build completely outclass every 2-handed build - melee or ranged - I’ve ever made, or anyone’s made in the last bunch of patches to such a degree there is virtually no reason for me to play them if I intend to farm either single player content or Crucible. They can’t compete in any aspect whatsoever to these other builds.

What compounds this issue for me is how 2-handed weapons play out in Hardcore Ultimate: they’re a liability. I can’t ever suggest a 2-handed weapon build to anyone just getting into the game, which breaks my heart because it’s so fun. Specifically, you need very high gear requirements to even make them work. And once you’re there, after expending all that effort to get BiS gear (like I did for both of those builds I mentioned earlier) you feel like crap when you look over at the poor man’s Coldbreaker as he kills Cronley in two seconds. Real rewarding that you spend all that time just to make your build slightly less bad. So this is a plea from not just me, but my little corner of the Hardcore community where we want to be able to play without the spectre of death looming over our shoulders at all times on Ultimate (had to throw that GD quote in there, a cookie goes to the first person to remember where it’s from).

Now that I’ve told you my personal experience and opinion, I’m going to pull out some general facts then stats to point out what specifically the problem is. Every weapon type and combination, I assume, is supposed to have it’s own merits and demerits. The problem with 2-handed is that, supposedly just like dual-wielding, it’s supposed to have high damage, but that just isn’t the case. Dual-wielding allows for not only much faster attacks and much easier time reaching attack speed (AS) cap, but also has the chance for both weapons to attack at once, which deals more damage than 2-handers half the time, so why bother with them! What makes this issue even worse is the fact that many of these 2-handed weapons (if not most of them) have really bad stat lines, despite their cool effects. This means that if I wanted to get even close to a dual-wielding build’s damage I need to entirely give up defense. But since I’m a Hardcore player, I can’t do that, so I have to be happy with clear speeds that make Sword-and-Board builds laugh at me.

See, I like the arrangement of +skills on all of the 2-handers, but the actual stats on them are garbage. A lot of them have little to no attack speed stats on them, like Obsidian Juggernaut (despite the fact that it has +'s to Fighting Form ??). The final nail in the coffin is the reduced gains from attack speed that 2-handed weapons have, making it virtually impossible to reach cap attack speed unless you do Ceno’s theory build. Another stat problem many have is that they have literally no identity, like Leviathan. Like, +s to cold damage but no conversion, what? Oh, and don’t even get me started with the awful task of trying to get higher conversion on 2-handers. The most I’ve ever seen it is 50% outside of weapons that don’t need it or Abomination proc for my Obsidian Juggernaut build (by the way, that proc is on enemy death, which means it’s utterly worthless on most bosses, gimping it even more). This is terrible compared to Dual-Wielding because both weapons can have a component that converts the damage as opposed to one in 2-handed weapons, not to mention the extra mileage that flat damage gets those builds.

I honestly don’t think I can keep going on about this - I’m going to go mad, much like whomever designed half of these weapons. They’re either gimped into the ground or nonsensically designed (holla’ at you Leviathan!). Of the ones that aren’t absurd, I absolutely love their design! I just wish I could make use of them, but I feel as though my time and effort are wasted when I could’ve made one of the many, many great and accessible builds that exist today. Overall, I really love how everything feels as though it’s getting balanced over time, but 2-handers just feel like they’ve been left in the dust. There was recently that patch that made Augments better, but it isn’t remotely enough. Between a gimped attack speed, small selection, bizarre stat lines on otherwise cool weapons, inability to use two components, and the lack of versatility that dual-wielding offers, 2-handers are so pathetic it almost makes me want to cry.

As a last note, just because something can clear Ultimate doesn’t mean anything - even in Hardcore - it’s just the effort required to do so, and it’s seriously inordinate how lopsided that is away from 2-handed builds. Wanted to get this out of the way before people come in here saying ‘oh my 2h build is just fine,’ when that really doesn’t mean anything when the standard of builds is, well, Commando or Coldbreaker at the moment. Even ten steps under them is still way above 2-handers right now.

As a last last note, I really hope this thread is going to make me look silly when the expansion comes out and you guys will have already been working on answering all my worries. But judging from the fact that the testers still make ‘lul 2h builds’ jokes without reserve, I can’t help but assume nothing has changed.

You don’t need threads for that. Waiting for 2H to be good (relative to anything else) is sufficient.

I’m not sold on everything you’ve said here, but I definitely agree that 2-handers are at a disadvantage with damage conversion. It might help if some of the “potent” weapon augments had conversion on them. People have also suggested letting 2-handers equip two components instead of one, or adding more powerful components specifically for them, but I’m fairly certain Crate has stated that neither of those is likely to happen.

Sarcasm so thick you could spread it on toast

As a 2H enthusiast, I have to agree on the subjects of conversion and identity; A lot of these weapons feel like they were created by pulling stats out of a hat and smashing them all together, rather than focusing them towards anything specific. For instance, as much as I love my Temporal Arcblade if only for its badass looks, every build I try and make around it inevitably drifts away back to sword-n-board or dualwield by time time late Ultimate comes around…

Biggest issue for me is giving up by default on the utility of a weapon component, and 5 devotion points + possible prerequisites if not using casting speed skills. Really major drawbacks for no reason I can think of since it’s by design and not technical limitations apparently…

Balance pass in last patch was really disappointing also… 15% base damage boost on Guillotine? Nothing done to make Stonefist/Leviathan and Stormreaver/Stormseker little more than clones when there’s already very limited options. Granted skills weren’t touched when some of those wouldn’t even be desirable on a 1h weapon… :frowning:

That said you can clear all the content with a variety of 2h builds so it’s not all that bad, even if you need to give up on speed and/or reliability to some extend.

I really do have a love/hate relationship with Kraken. Without it, 2H would be completely useless, but being required to spend 5+ devotion points to make 2H usable is frustrating and indicative of poor design.

I completely agree. Kraken is an absolutely absurd devotion with how powerful it is, but having to rely on something like that and still not being very good really paints a very dim picture for 2-handed builds in general.

I think they should perhaps nerf Kraken slightly and fix/buff all the 2-handed weapons individually. Their stats are all so bizarre as is, but if they were normalized and buffed then I don’t see a need to keep Kraken so beefy. But perhaps that should be left for the patch after they buff 2-handers, since if they nerf Kraken and don’t go far enough with upgrading them they’ll just get gimped entirely.

I think Kraken’s very existence is indicative of the problem. The idea that 2H needs an entire constellation to itself just to begin being competitive should highlight the issue. Personally I don’t really enjoy being forced to take it when crafting a 2H build as it limits your devotion choices inside a system that is otherwise relatively adjustable.

The lack of utility offered when it comes to components has also been mentioned by a few others but is worth reiterating. Every other build has the luxury of using a second component for extra damage conversion, extra ADCtH, mobility (Chaos Strike), covering resists, etc. The simplest fix would of course be to just allow two components in 2H weapons. I think the official stance was against it but I honestly can’t imagine a reason why, it should only create a problem if 2H weapons were significantly more powerful than other options which is obviously not currently the case.

I found witching hour with my witch hunter and tried respec to a pet build. I respec’d again after trying it.

Oh, you just do not know how to make a pet build around this riffle properly.

Safarel is right. That particular gun is not really a great example of the 2h problem as OP is describing it;. it was always meant to be in a hybrid pet build and not a typical weapon attack build.

That being said, don’t feel bad that it didn’t work as pet hybrid builds are one of the most advanced/complex builds to make correctly. I’d check out DaShivs fire pet build as he outlines fantastically what you need to focus on when making any pet build, including hybrid ones.

Although I can tell you that Witch Hunter is probably the worst class combo to make Witching Hour work. You’d probably want either Witchblade or Conjurer.

Fix stats on 2hs (more attack speed thrown around, more stats in general, more base dmg, better conversion) and let people stack 2 components on them (OR just make components you put in them much better (like 2x as good), and nerf kraken.

Look everything is solved. Crate go!

I couldn’t agree more with this…Kraken’s bonuses are wonderful, but it’s a total crutch for 2H weapons.

I like the suggestion from earlier in the thread to nerf it slightly and/or change up the bonuses so it isn’t always a must-take for 2H weapons, then buff 2handers across the board to compensate. Devotions are supposed to be choices but kraken makes builds more rigid rather than encouraging experimentation.

Agreed

+1 to this

Last patch did make 2handers stronger, but two sockets is what would put them on par with dual wields and sword and boards.

As someone who has been asking for two components on 2H weapons since 2014, this change alone would not bring them anywhere near DW/S&B. It’d bring them closer but not anywhere near the same level.

I’m also in support of giving two-handed weapons a nice buff. The worst that could happen is that 2 handers become the “meta” build for a few patches. Maybe components that are unique to two-handed weapons would help? The abundance of skills or items which provide flat damage synergize with dual-wielding so well that it makes two-handed weapons fall by the wayside. Two-handed skill transmuters (might of the bear) are also a bit meh, so if the devs are reluctant to allow two-handed weapons to be equipped with 2 components, perhaps this is a possible buff avenue.

I agree that 2h’s are in need of a buff. I’d like to mention though that this issue seems to be one shared by many ARPG’s. Not sure why as I was never a numbers guy, but I’ve played my share of PoE and D3 and as I recall both of them had many threads about the lackluster performance of 2h weapons in comparison to S/B or DW users.

Well, okay. I’ve been looking over DaShiv’s post, read about 60% of the text there by this point, influenced a lot of choices in making that build. Class probably was the problem, it definitely didn’t seem like the optimal class for the gun, since my main problem was really slow kill times.

Aside from kill times though, threat management seems absurdly difficult in this game, so a 32 NB/50 Occ that I was, I had no defensive options whatsoever trying to use a 2H weapon, low offense AND low defense, which is why I think it’s a problem relevant to this thread. After 3 full respecs I’ve settled on a vit dmg phantasmal blades shield build.

Ultos builds were top tier back then in 1.0.0.3-1.0.0.4 but Savagery fix put an end to it, oh boy was so fun to play. :’<

i wish GD could be more “berserk-like” with 2 handers.
