I would like if you could still play your character after he dies on hardcore. Just not in hardcore anymore. I don’t like the character isn’t playable at all anymore.
'Cos when I’ve spent a lot time on that char I’d still like to be able to play even though it sucks I died so i’m not hardcore anymore but yea… at least all my work wasn’t for nothing. EDIT: except for the fun i had on it ofcourse
For me the point of hardcore is it makes the game cooler and you get more into it and you really care about ur char.(and u dont just go in head on lik an /dev/null) But for the purpose of making videos of your build etc I would like if u can still acces ur character…
hardcore certainly does make you care about your character more, but allowing you to play a dead hardcore character in softcore would remove that adrenaline rush that you enjoy so much, wouldn’t it? You’d probably think “it’s not a big deal if I die, I can just play softcore if I do”.
Playing only hardcore I can understand where you are coming from.
I literally got used to it by dying over and over
You also have the shared stash, where I’d recommend to keep all the important stuff so you don’t actually lose everything. Other than that, play a tad more defensive and keep a cool head and you will enjoy hardcore much more.
The only way I’d be fine with hardcore characters still existing in the game’s world is as ghosts. The death popup would play as usual, the ghost would show, BUT you would then be able to load up the ghost.
The ghost would be exactly like the character when they died, but get this, NOTHING would work! Kinda like Gothic 3 on release! No aggro from monsters, no interaction with chests, walls, shrines… Nothing. Just aimlessly wandering the land of the living and unleashing furious skills that do nothing.
Pros
Accurate recollection of the character’s status at the moment of their death.
For those sentimental enough to play hardcore but care about dying, a period of detachment/disengagement when they can still view their chars but come to grips with their fate.
Sightseeing mode, for those times when you feel like observing the details on the assets .
I’ll never understand these posts. “I want to play hardcore without it being hardcore”. You’re the reason why modern developers have changed the old Normal difficulty to Hard.
The only difference between them is the one thing you complain about… if a HC char became SC upon death, then he would be no different from a SC char that has not died yet.
Hardcore is generally more fun, intense, and generally makes me care more about what is happening in game. It is also about gaining the honor of beating the entire game on it which is really cool.
That said allowing a character that dies in HC to go to softcore would be a pretty decent change – POE does this very well and in my experience the HC experience is still very much the same except with the benefit that if you die you can still access your character just in the generally slightly less fun and intense setting of softcore. I find this especially to be a good thing to have if your high level HC character happens to die from a bug or something random like that which may be out of your control.
If this is something you are afraid of, play softcore. No, really. That’s why I play softcore. If I knew the game was bug-free and the only way to die was from my own ineptitude or hubris, I would go full HC all the time, but I know it isn’t. So I don’t.
As others have said, the draw of hardcore is enforced permadeath. It’s the Nuzlocke Run of ARPGs. If you don’t want the risk, you don’t have to take it.
I used to be like you, DaTuro. I lost 2 HC characters and in doing so, simply lost my shit as I was devastated that I had lost all the time and emotion that I had invested in to those 2 characters.
I am a lot happier now with my SC character. I still regard death as an absolute tragedy and I do everything in my power to avoid it. 7909 HP in Normal Veteran as a LVL 50 Fire Strike Pyro.
It make take some time and mental training but I can confirm that I still get a very similar thrill in keeping my death count at 0 as I did in keeping my HC character alive.
