There’s plenty of reasons not to want the game to have ‘better’ graphics.
For me it won’t add much to the game.
It’ll be more resource heavy.
It’s not as easy as ‘upgrade engine’ or whatever. The whole content pipeline and all levels are designed with specific constraints in mind. So I’d need both upgrading the engine and upgrading all graphical content. You pretty much might as well make a new game at that point
This is also a good point. You probably can’t do much better with DX9 tech.
So you think graphics never push sales ever so why do people buy remasters ever it’s the exact same game the only difference is graphics. The biggest selling point in 70% of games are graphics this is just wrong lol. When I say improve graphics I don’t mean make it look unrecognizable but to make it look better I again don’t understand how making things look better is a negative. I feel you are disagreeing to just disagree. Also go watch the ads for Diablo 4 the graphics and lighting are a massive selling point like most new games. D4 is a bad game but nice graphics are the entire identity of many games the entire racing genre is based around graphics.
that’s literally my point, updating visuals doesnt’ default necessary make things look better to all people
i’ve literally just given you 2 modern high class examples of that very thing
“updating” visuals can mean very different things to different people; and result in just that
Hell even our own GrimTex mod showcases this on about the smallest scale possible
minecraft
yes, i’m sure that’s why fans spend loads on custom driving setups, replica cars that totally don’t handle different ingame
i’m not saying Graphics can’t have an impact, i’m saying you’re both A probably attributing too much to them, #Minecraft, B, upgrade/modern doesnt’ equate to better visuals, C if it was worth it Crate probably has considered it, D anyone actually dismissing a good game purely because of visuals probably is too superficial and don’t deserve to be catered to
-and personally i don’t want the risk of a game i already find very visually pleasing to get a polish and shine that then might end up detracting from that aesthetic, and most of all i’d like Crate to spend the resources on something that actually matters (which ofc just subjectively happens to be “matters to me” )
Idk I guess I have more confidence in them to do a good job and not ruin their own IP. Also everyone who plays Minecraft on PC has graphics mods. Things looking better is nice and more pleasing. I completely understand your fear but I have yet to see a game be ruined by graphic updates they always keep the feel the same because they created the feel and atmosphere themselves. I again enjoy the graphics myself but I would love for the game to get more popular you and I know some people won’t play games if they look “old” and people in the racing genre including myself appreciate the graphics I play on a controller not the whole set up those people play f1 and corsa mainly. I would just love for more people to play the game and graphics historically seems to work.
it’s not about confidence or even competence, otherwise i would have expressed it
it’s purely about how “tech” directly interacts.
Like with D4 and D2r you have elements that look out of place, not because they look bad, but there is just something “off” about them. They weren’t made bad, but the way the graphics/engine/render handles them or intermingles them with surrounding textures (or whatever the technical jargon/element is) make it stand out different.
Character “stands out”/looks like it’s a 1080p botox lip filler duckface-kiss in a 720p pogchamp world.
Fire/burning give you that matrix sensation where it stands out in a way it “shouldn’t” if it make sense, like it doesn’t fit or the world doesnt’ fit. 2.9d in a 3d world or 2.10d in a 2d world or something.
it’s small stuff in somethnig that otherwise looks good, but because it’s there, it stands out, it’s frequent, it’s centred, it’s inescapable and then is just “present” constant. Like a dead pixel in the corner of your monitor, just far down enough not to matter, but still juuust enough there you notice, and don’t forget.
That’s like the type of graphical update/render overhaul that i wouldnt’ want “buggin” me in my precious GD
again, that’s basically not even a slight dig at the Blizzard team, or any remote concern about Crate’s abilities, because it’s not something to do with the actual art or textures but how the tech handles it when everything is combined. Unlike with the postproccessing and foglayer; you can’t turn it off
Kinda even more offtopic but slightly related, i mentioned this some days ago to someone else on discord, how we have some newer and newer games with the most advanced graphics, looking their absolute worst(to me); because we’ve reached a state where it’s like double uncanny valley, things are looking “too fake” so it stands out more.
-not exactly the same relation as ex D2r or potential update with GD graphics, but sorta just a note to help how my general perspective on some visuals can be
depends what you mean, and who/what it’s in reference to (but i’m assuming me since i’m the only one that mentioned d4?)
the divisive part should be clear tho i think?, not like D4 was universally praised among gamers, heck just on this forum you can find many expressing their disappointment with it from an ARPG perspective - i haven’t played it so i can say nothing about the gameplay(I’m not sending more money blizzard’s way again )
If you mean my visual mention, that will likely be way more subjective, - and as i havent’ played it i’m just going on all the gamplay vids i’ve seen.
Tho i’m def not the only that’s said it doesn’t look pretty everywhere, “grey filter”/“red filter” etc, even if it might not all be the same gripes i had.
And keep in mind i’m not saying it’s a “bad/ugly” looking game, it just has elements like the ones i mentioned that’s off “to me”. On a technical aspect it probably can’t be said it’s bad, but the way it comes together forms parts that detracts or “stands out”, imo.
