Man o man, i love this game,leveling my first character occulist/necro.
I just made it to level 40! Just using self found gear…how can i get better gear…or just continue with self found gear?

Mostly just play the game and save any good pieces of gear you find for future characters.
If you run into gear issues, you can go to the Steps of Torment and try a little farming. It might be fun to just go through it for its own sake.
faction vendors in the cities usually provide equip good enough to sustain you until you are able to drop or trade your first legendaries.
My advice BTW would be to level up more than one char, so they can help each other with their respective drops . Usually the first character reaches very high levels without having found good equipment yet, so you may want to alternate the chars you play.
It’s good to save equipment even if your character doesn’t need it (anymore). You can use it for a new character.

You can play Normal/Veteran and Elite difficulty with self found and faction gear. Just keep playing.
Be friendly to the Barrowholm people, they sell good faction stuff for your class combo. 
The game gets harder when you hit Ultimate, but that shouldn´t happen too soon, so don´t worry. If you got trouble later on, ask for help. Not all builds handle Ultimate as good as Elite.
