The last patch also increased the amount meat produced per cow to 1500. Thank for all the meat, but 500 per cow was more than enough.
thx,

1500 is a tad much but 500 seemed a tad low to help towns will higher pops who need meat to supply to house
The thing with so much meet at once is you cant smoke it fast enough. Even if your villagers take it to their houses it might still spoil. I need to slaughter at least 2 cattle per year per barn, so now 1000 meat per slaughter per cow is guaranteed to spoil.
For me personally the meat balance was fine before. I could sustain a town of 60 people with 3 hunter cabins and 1 smoker. As the town expands the deer get pushed away and the hunters become less efficient. Moving to cattle is the obvious scalable way of providing a steady source of meat for the smokers. My 1 barn replaces the 3 hunters, but then i add a smoker to process the meat faster.
Currently there is a general inefficiency in how the villagers collect and store food, so if you don’t carefully consider the placement of your resource collection and storage buildings, you struggle to stay ahead on food production.
you can you’d just have to plan it out… root cellar by the barn and 5 or 6 smokehouses… not real efficient when it comes to villagers but you can get most of it smoked…
even if I smoke it all now it will still spoil. I would be making 3000 - 4000 smoked meat per barn per year. That’s enough to keep around 200 villagers.
I mean, I don’t need to deal with the waste so its not a problem. I don’t think it was the intention to boost the cattle meat with the hot fix.
I think from my point of view I’d like it to be what one would expect from a real life cow, rather than being tuned to suit the ease of play. If everything is at realistic levels and the village still can’t survive then possibly the behaviour of the villagers and the management options is what would need tweaking and adding to. Or actually I think the climate is a bit harsher than is realistic for some of the map types. No real lowland lake has a month long blizzard, and real life villagers would want to keep hold of their baskets while running for shelter, knowing that it could make a difference to their future needs
I don’t get this change, amount of meat seemed fine before. But before giving cows more meat I would rather up the max capacity of barns.
I think the extra cow meat might have been unintentional. Its not mentioned in the patch notes.
Do you know if there is automatic population control? What’s up with the 16 limit?
Mainly they need to sort out the weather. In the sort of area this map appears to represent, an early frost in September should be a freak occurrence not the nearly every year it appears to be in the game. And this affects cattle because it means I can’t grow enough of the stuff they need for over winter.
I hope they do, this is early access after all
Going above the max will give you penalties (health and milk production I think). There’s no auto-slaughter atm afaik.
I see the upgraded Barn now shows xx/16. So that was addressed. now max pop before negative effects is 16. Yay!
Huh? You can set the herd size and anything over that gets slaughtered automatically at the beginning of the year
Oh that’s a nice addition! Definitely didn’t work in my old save (0.7.5, no hotfixes). But the game initially showed 13/16 cows as over max capacity until I manually slaughtered some so maybe there was another problem.
Are you sure your barn didn’t just butcher 3 cows to get population back under the limit?
It could well be, but I’m pretty sure i had 10 cattle in the barn end of the year and 3 got born, making it 13/12. I then manually slaughtered 1 and it produced 1500 meat. I do this beginning of every year to control cattle pop.
How does the barn automatically control the population?
[UPDATE]
OK so tried that same save and ran it for a year. Cows get culled as you say. For a small barn the limit is 12 so it kills anything more than 12. I dont think this feature worked before. So i was unaware of how it was supposed to work. Most i had in a small barn was 15.
I would actually like to have the chance to move the newborn cows to a new barn to repopulate or a “slaughtering barn” next to my smokers in town.
Could the max count be increased by 4 to allow for own choice of population control? Make the default max the barn capacity. Or, set a delay on the cull?
Cheers,
There is already 16 limit on tier 2 barn. And cows don’t get slaughtered immediately. You can pause the game as soon as u get notification that additional cows were born, and move them to another barn.
I get that tier 2 barn has higher limit, but it seems like auto pop control did not work before. So I ended up with things like 14/12 cows, which causes herd health to go down. I needed to manually intervene to either slaughter or move them. Now this is no longer the case it seems and pop control works again(too well this time).
Did the experiment. 12/12 end of the year with 3 births. Seconds after the message pops up the first one is already slaughtered. It then keeps slaughtering one about every 2 or 3 seconds, stopping with a pop at 13/12. @Zantai , this is where you are right.
At 13/12 I slaughtered 1 to get it back to 12/12, not knowing that 2 were already killed, as the the herd number was reduced so quickly and the meat didn’t show up in storage yet. Then i suddenly had 1500 meat in storage, XD
Can the culling be delayed till after the cow birth message disappears or perhaps till the heard health falls below a certain threshold(like below 50%)? There is barely time to pause and move the cattle around before they are killed.
[EDIT]
What will happen if I accidentally move 4 cows to a full barn? i will lose them all in 10 seconds?
Thx,
