Does soil type and fertility matter to fruit trees, or even different kinds of fruit trees?
Fertility matters for fruit trees, but itâs a different fertility than you see in the general fertility overlay. You can see the fruit tree fertility by clicking on an arborist building.
Great, thanks for that explanation. I will do that. Itâs a bit awkward for the first Arborist isnât it? Where to put it (since you canât see beforehand what the fertility is going to be)?
Just remember you can adjust the impact circle for the arborist building so you donât need to waste any planting space on the building itself.
Yes! I just noticed this today from some other posts on here, and I totally did not notice that I could do it. Will change dramatically how I lay out my orchards. Does a tree with âa bitâ of its footprint within the circle get harvested, or does it need a majority, or all of its footprint? Nearby fruit trees outside the circle definitely are not harvested?
Is there any practical difference between the two trees that deliver fruit at the same time (apples and pears?)
Unclear to me at this time.
I do know if you plant densely fertility crashes. Having said that, Iâm not sure how much arborist fertility actually matters.
Grazing cattle and/or having other trees didnât seem to affect things.
Per other posts, villagers will pick fruit if places in town (eg snacking). I havenât seen this.
@Marshall_Davout - As long as the trunk of the tree is in the circle, the fruit will be harvested.
Iâve never actually seen the arborist do this, but trees just outside the circle always end up harvested for me. Maybe it was a villager or even deer (doubt it, too many people around), but it might be the arborist collects outside of their work circle, at least close enough trees.
Arborist fertility seems to greatly affect the longevity of your fruit trees.
Each tree takes 4 âcellsâ in the grid. As long as the center of these 4 cells is inside the arboristâs circle, it will be harvested.
I must say that I donât really bother with that anyway, because if some trees are outside the circle itâs not a problem.
I did see that when people were âseeking foodâ, they would take fruits from the trees. So I do plant some fruit trees a bit everywhere so that my people are âseeking foodâ for a shorter time. I havenât payed much attention since though, but probably they can only do it during the period indicated in the arborist building for each fruit tree (so plant peach and apple here and there).
The most annoying part is that once their lifetime has passed, you have to plant a new one (would be nice to have a checkbox to make it automatic - activated by default).
When I first planted an orchard I watched a laborer come up to a peach tree outside the circle, snag a peach, and keep walking. He ate the peach because it disappeared and he didnât drop it. I was surprised, but kind of happy too. Farm fresh peaches are the best.
I had no idea about snacking. This means there is a whole lot of âoff bookâ food potentially available that never gets into the broader âeconomic systemâ. I am going to be planting peach and apple trees in pairs everywhere!
Iâve seen trees with just a tip of their four square inside the tiniest edge of a circle getting picked.
Yes, making them plant a new fruit tree automatically would be great, its too much micro management.
I have seen now that instead normal trees grow there which is not so useful, you have to cut them befor planting a new fruit tree.
Also the fertilization of cows gazing should also impact fertilisation for the fruit trees which does not at the moment.
Ive noticed that this kind of fertility cant be altered in anyway. Its totally random on the map. So in maps such as arid highlands, you cant place an arborist anywhere on the map. You really have to choose carefully.
Setting deer to herd in the middle of them do not change their fertility at all, which is a little confusing to me. Makes no sense, butâŚ
And by the way, blueberry bushes can be moved (only those apparently). So I move those inside my city in various places so that people can take some when they are hungry (which happens more often than you may think).
Before I would plant apple and peach trees, but blueberry bushes only take one space and no need to re-plant them.
When youâre placing the Arborist building it shows the Arborist fertility overlay. You can compare this by selecting between the Arborist and Crop Field from the build menu and it should show you separate fertility values
Interesting use of Blueberries. To date I have been moving them all into my city in a dense copse, and collecting them all with a single forager. But spreading them around for snacking is interesting too.
I use foragers only for herbs, willow & roots (when I have some ⌠which is close to never since I like Alpine)
