How does storage management work in this game?

I’ve got several storages, but they’re all running full. I’ve set some storages only to accept certain goods, yet they still overflow with resources they should not be accepting. I can’t even figure out how to set a storage limit for a certain type of cargo, as all the buttons are greyed out except the Discard one.

So what does this game want me to do? The interface is very unclear to me. Other games either have storages only accepting one type of cargo, or a city-wide production limit I can set. But in this game it seems factories keep on producing and overflowing storages even when I clearly indicate that storages aren’t meant to be used for those cargo.

Not sure the game is working as intended, but I find it very confusing and frustrating.

In the storage interface you can click on the resource you want to limit. Next click the round button left of the storage limits to enable them. The minimum amount will be automatically requested from other storage locations, while the storage will stop accepting a resource type once above the maximum. It’s quite common to see a storage exceed the maximum a little though, so it’s not a hard limit.

Edit: and in the main resource interface you can do a similar thing and set production limits. Production will pause above the maximum and resume once below the minimum

There are 4 types of storage in this game and one optional:

  1. Stockyard: These stores your raw materials, logs, coal, stones etc
  2. Storehouse: Stores your byproduct and city necessities, example: wax, candles, arrows, Coats etc can also store food items but not recommended due to its high spoilage rate. It is also your early game storage build for storing gold.
  3. Root Cellars: Stores food, both raw food and their byproducts. Food last longer here
  4. Granary: Stores grain
  5. Banks

Stockyard is your most basic storage building, build these in a centralize work area, adjacent buildings benefit due to the short distance workers travel for raw materials.
Example (Early game build around 4 without limiting to a single resource until your city is stabled enough):

_______ Stockyard (Wood only + Planks)_______
      ↓ ↓
Saw Pit Firewood spliter
    ↓ ↓
Furniture Workshop Smoke House

     _______ Stockyard (Clay + Coal Only) _______
     ↓ ↓
Potter Building Brickyard

Storehouse is next in line, build these in a secure centralize location, normally near to your trading post, raiders will loot from them. Also recommend that you build one next to your production buildings and limit it to the products said building use and produce.

     _______ Barn(Cattle) _______
                  ↓
StoreHouse (Hide only or + Hide Coat, shoes)
         ↓ ↓
      Tannery + Well Cobbler Shop

Root Cellars are generally next to your population area, making it easier for grocers to stock your markets, it has a lower spoilage rate and is best suited for food storage.

Granary are normally next to Windmill, which is next to your grain farms, I normally build a few close to my population zone and limit to flour only

Banks are your optional but recommended high valuables storage buildings, once you unlock these, secure them and untick gold, shields, swords etc from all storehouse to ensure they are only stored here

A setup from one on my playthroughs

Storage limits work as follows:

  1. Laborers and wagons will transport goods to meet the set limits.
  2. Your production workers will ignore the limits and will be able to dump produced goods into the nearest warehouse, even if their quantity exceeds the maximum limit. In fact, they will dump resources even if their quantity exceeds the maximum capacity, which is why you may sometimes see a warehouse building overflowing with resources.

You can exploit this by setting the maximum limit to 0 so production workers will drop off produced goods in this warehouse and laborers and wagons will distribute the excess to other warehouses.

If you don’t want to store a certain type of goods in the warehouse at all you need to uncheck the box and over time laborers and wagons will transport goods of that type to other warehouses where their storage is allowed.

Interesting discussion on a game facet I still do not fully understand myself.
Thank you for the posts. I will need to play around with the control settings.

I construct storage buildings at junction points outside of my town where gathering, growing or manufacturing takes place. I always construct one of each type. I also build a central in-town storage of storehouse and root cellar. I place wagons at my junction points and remote locations when available. Minimizing transit time seemed an optimal goal but I don’t claim my arrangement is ideal.

Wagons are also listed in the Storage grouping. I presume they only affect the transport of goods to/from point of manufacture and storage/usage locations? Can they be customized to transport only certain items the way other storage units can be configured?

They also carry supplies to temporary shelters which supposed to be placed next to production buildings to provide food and a place to hide in winter.
No, they cannot be customized.
