I find it incredibly frustrating trying to use archers when they walk at a snail’s pace. When you tell units to attack, they move considerably quicker, so when trying to fire and retreat with archers, you lose any and all advantage because the attacking unit moves twice as fast as the retreating unit. Is there any way this can be examined? Maybe a double right click to make your units run or jog? It seems a bit silly that units can run to attack but not run to retreat.

I agree with this, also while setting a destination at the other side of youre town. They walk to it, but they need the run the most of the times. Maybe add a stamina function to it. That running and combat use stamina.
being lightly armoured if at all archers should be the quickest and for longest… heavy armour should impede speed and stamina a great deal
It does, actually: Archers (and hunters) walk faster than non-archers.
(This is also sometimes a problem, when the archers arrive at the combat flag before their screening troops and enemies notice.)
