kraken could really use a buff

Oh, plz. Giant+chariot procs provide enough sustain for CDR SJ Purifier to farm gladiator with no buffs, consumables or ADCTH.
As for 1H vs 2H its mostly problem with endgame scaling of +flat dmg modifiers that shorten the gap betwen 1h and 2h weapon dmg. For example lets take preserver mace with ~150 average flat dmg and compare it with preserver warmaul with ~450 average flat dmg. Thats 3 times moar falt dmg! But after you add all flat stuff from mastery/devotions/items/skillz the difference is almost gone. It dosent help that only 3 skillz in the game scale better with 2H weapons - Firestrike, Savagery and Bone harvest.

“Release the KRAKEN”

I have no opinion, just wanted to say this

Bunch of regen and 4 blue for 3 points? Far from worst T1.

-Wouldn’t mind seeing Cast Speed on Kraken. Perhaps change the Movement Speed bonuses to Total Speed and help out 2H melee’s forever-abysmal situation too.

-Buffing Kraken is among the most minor possible buffs to 2H anyways; a very small bandaid to a very big problem.

2H weapons are statsticks. You’re doing it wrong if you actually try to hit things with them. I deleted my 200% AS 2H Commando at level 91 because I just couldn’t bare to take it any further. On the other hand, my 2H Callidor’s Tempest build is doing exceptionally well.

In that vein, 2H makes for far more powerful caster weapons than they do actual weapons. Why beg for staffs when every 2H in the game is essentially a staff?

Why though, especially with AoM’s amazing respec system?

It was removed in the great character purge of 2017, where I went from 44 chars down to 7.

Main menu was taking too long to load.

Much agreed that the Kraken needs some improvements seeing that it is almost required for 2-handed builds. +% Total Speed, +Flat Physical Damage, maybe other bonuses?

Just did this myself - much better now!

gib buff pls kthx
t. player with inexplicable inordinate fondness for 2h weapons

This is the second worst part of the game, first being the relic crafting system. I just want to hit hard with 2 hander melee

If only PoE didn’t give me motion sickness.

By far the worst T1 constellation is Hammer. It’s so bad y’all have forgotten about it. Probably by choice.

Personally I prefer increasing the base attacks per second for all 2H weapons, as a start. I’m tired of the stereotype in video games of 2H melee weapons being necessarily slower to swing than 1H weapons. You get two arms for extra leverage to compensate for the extra length and weight. But somehow this fact escapes most video game designers. And it doesn’t help that in GD the 2H melee animations have the hands fairly close together all the time whereas IRL they would be further apart most of the time when handling axe- or pollaxe-type weapons. For 2H swords they’re OK.

As for 2H ranged weapons vs 1H ranged weapons on the subject of reload time IRL, well, no comment…

If we want to be realistic, all weapons of this genre are slow (except maybe rapiers/daggers). For some reason 1H is sped up for “fun” reasons but 2H gets to be left behind in the dust because “if it’s bigger it must be slower!”

Please buff me, thanks!

I’d LOVE to see you try to swing a one handed hammer and then proceed to swing a two handed hammer IRL at the same speed as the former, without getting really tired and with perfection… Just do it.

That’s why two handed weapons are also designed to be slower in games, because you’d end up screwing your arms by swinging them around like crazy IRL, and getting tired very fast.

If we really want to be realistic here maybe we should strip out all the spells and force players to reload guns too while we’re at it

I sure do love painstaking realism in my escapes from reality yessir

You sound like you have extensive real life experience with medieval 1H and 2H hammers. Perhaps you can show us a video illustrating your argument?

First of all, Grim Dawn doesn’t model stamina. It doesn’t matter how tired a person gets. What essentially matters is achievable attack frequency, which is what Grim Dawn does model.

Second, it’s easier to swing around a weapon with two hands than with one, right? Then why can’t you design a longer/heavier version that swings just as fast with two hands as the original version with one hand?

Third, much of the speed and power from many upper-body movements in melee combat comes not from the arms but from the hips. This is also true in sports like tennis, baseball and even golf. You can keep your arms relatively static and still be able to swing a weapon quickly just by rotating your hips.

Fourth, both a 1H hammer and a 2H hammer will be slow. There’s no getting around it. The balance and weight distribution of the weapon matters a lot.

Fifth, the tangential velocity at the point of impact is a major factor in determining the damage from a weapon swing. From high school/university physics courses you may recall that tangential velocity is a function of the product of angular velocity and radius. Most 2H melee weapons are longer and therefore have a longer radius from having a point of impact further away from the body. And so it requires less angular velocity to achieve the same tangential velocity at the point of impact.

Sixth, the fastest 2H swords in Grim Dawn have about 1.5 base APS while the slowest 1H maces have about 1.66 base APS. This is what I mean when I say that in GD, all 2H melee weapons are necessarily innately slower than 1H melee weapons. But, can you honestly say that a 2H claymore/greatsword will be necessarily slower than a 1H mace IRL? There are plenty of YouTube videos demonstrating that modern replicas of 2H greatswords can be in fact quite fast to swing.

This is really a non-argument. Do you think the designers of GD made 2H melee weapons slow as an element of fantasy or escapism? No, they made them slow because they, like many other video game designers, thought 2H melee weapons are necessarily slow in real life. Certainly they didn’t do it because it helps gameplay - no one wants offensive capabilities to be slower rather than faster.

And, like it or not, nearly all works of fiction have some elements of realism to them so that the audience can relate. But if you want to be realistic, it helps to be actually realistic.

Well, I don’t know, why don’t you ask Crate why they made 2 handers slow. My guess is probably it’s as much balance related as anything, because it’s not like they went full realism on firearms and such.

Usually half of those “elements of realism” consist of old wives’ tales that have become accepted as “common knowledge” about insert subject here.

“Realism” should always, ALWAYS take a backseat to balance and fun in a game where you can shoot death-ray lasers from your hands and conjure explosives out of nothing but “energy”.

Well, in this case you can kill two birds with one stone - making 2H melee weapons faster would improve both balance and realism.

One thing I noticed is that while 1H melee weapons are far faster then 2H melee this does not carry over to same extend to ranged. While 1H ranged are faster then 2H ranged the difference is far less when compared to melee weapons.

I expect this is one of the reasons why you see a fair number of 2H ranged builds and nearly zero 2H melee builds(besides those using the shaman mastery).

Having done martial arts and re-enactment amongst other things I can tell you that there isn’t much of a difference between the speed of many two handed weapons and single handed weapons. Polearms and two handers are not as heavy as people like to think because the reality of weapons like two handed warhammers is that essentially they are just a single handed warhammer head mounted on a longer pole. Polearms are slightly heavier, sometimes quite a bit heavier but they are not slower to use. Two handed and bastard swords are as quick as a single hander with the right body mechanics and dual wielding for the most part is not realistic. There are examples of it historically in certain weapon styles and countries but it is not the norm because of how important and effective shields were. Watch videos of someone using a Spadone;

Super slow right? Note: techniques have been slowed down as these are intended as instructional.

The two handed melee weapons in grim dawn are over exaggerated which is not a bad thing but being slower than single handed weapons never made much sense to me but I guess that is how they want to balance how much damage a two handed build can potentially put out (at least on paper and statistics.)
