I’m sort of a new player, so bear with me here:
I am sure everyone deals with the headache of dealing with stashes and stashes full of loot. I feel like a big part of this game and time spent is determining what to keep and what to sell or dismantle. So what’s a good guideline for being efficient with loot management? Sometimes I’m tempted to just make 1000 dynamite and dismantle every single piece, clear my tabs and just start over…
Is that something people do?
How do I know what to keep vs. automatically dismantle? Do I have to individually look at every single piece of gear and determine if I’d ever use said skill(s) on a new character? That sounds very time consuming. I know that every now and then an item will drop that is super rare, and will not likely drop again any time soon. So how do I know when this happens? Is it necessary to look at all the FOA items in grim tools item database so I can determine whats worth keeping?
What are some good rules of thumb regarding loot drops/ management to increase efficiency so I can spend more time playing? As it stands I have 5 characters with maxed out tabs full of gear and it feels overwhelming. I totally need to clean house, but don’t want to lose any “rare” items-

without GD item assistant I’d be lost, but nor sure if you’re willing to use 3rd party software
Grim Dawn item assistant is the way to go for me
Now that we can reroll affixes, it makes sens to keep Monster infrequents with at least 1 great rare affix.
I saw the title and my immediate thought was “EVERYTHING, put it in Item Assistant”. I just don’t keep non-MI Greens and lower gear, the rest is in IA.

I collect purple sets. That’s my thing. I want to have the entire sheebang.
I also collect a few odds & ends, like the Magi rings. Because they are rare to come by and I know they are sought after on certain classes.
Because I don’t have a wide knowledge of the possible classes in the game, I don’t collect MIs, blues, or triple-rares that could be of use on a future alt. And because I don’t use stash tools, that’s for the best.
If you don’t want to use Item Assistant then I would suggest the following.
Keep:
- one copy of non-set level 84 and 94 legendaries (two copies for weapons that you might want to dual wield)
- one copy of set legendaries that don’t have a craftable piece (eg SR sets, Dark One)
- one copy of ascendable epics (two for dual-wieldable weapons)
- one copy of the very small number of good non-ascendable epics (eg Magelord rings)
- insanely good examples of MIs - you can set a very high standard for this because of rerolling
Don’t keep:
- any craftable level 84 or 94 legendary (all set items, provided the set has one craftable piece, and most helms)
- any lower level (<84) legendaries (if you happen to get a good one while levelling, fine, otherwise you don’t need them)
- any non-ascendable epics (with the few exceptions mentioned above)
- MIs not for your current build (unless insanely good)
Obviously detonate any legendaries you don’t keep.

So funny you should mention that…literally yesterday on Ascended mode both Magi dropped their legendary rings in the same run, Khonsar and Sethris- I couldn’t believe it- and those particular Magi rings are heavily sought after for fire shred and retaliation builds IIRC-

I can’t express my disappointment as to how many times I forget to do this, and sell them instead like a rookie would.
I used to not bother until one day I wanted to craft some boots. I realised that I would need ~2000 scrap to get a good pair.

Very solid protocol.
I’m running something similar, except I keep two of each item and three of each weapon, because playing HC and I might need backups.
One thing that costs me a lot of time is deciding which two to keep.
Say I get a few fiendgaze tomes.
I start looking at all of them and fitlering out the ones with the worst rolls. Eventually only keeping the highest two.
Then in few days I have more Fiendgaze tomes…
On the bright side, when the time comes to use any legendary in the build, it’s usually a pretty good one, because of all this generational selection running.
But boy it takes time when I get to sorting my stash once in a while.
Hardcore introduces some new considerations, for sure. Maybe you want to keep multiple copies of legendaries that get used in a lot of builds.
The question than is which MI are good enough to keep? I’m new as well. started just before fangs and started a Primalist when it came out. Just now started on Ultimate after beating Veteran and Elite. Started to get a ton of gear. Obviously keeping all the purples and blue sets until if Find out what I can craft or not, but when I get MI that aren’t double rare I’m not sure which ones are great. I see myself getting the inventory manager mod cuz my time is limited and I don’t want to spend a bunch of time farming gear I’ve already had drop.
The simplest solution is just to use Item Assistant, which works well and it actively maintained. Upthread I was suggesting a system for people who don’t want to use IAGD (for whatever reason).
As for which MIs to keep, it really is hard to make a one-size-fits-all rule. If you pick them all up and put them in IAGD you will get a feel for which are good when you come to use them.
