Yet there are riftgates!
How´d ya explain that?

The lore explanation is that the Grim Dawn caused rifts to tear open all over the world.

ugdenbog and gloomwald also has riftgates. and background info of ugdenbog from grim misadventure also states that the aetherials and chthonians have difficulties entering ugdenbog jungle because of a mysterious presence that denies their influences. this support zantai’s statement above about riftgates’ appearances caused by the grim dawn event.

The coming of the Aetherials is proof of that and the rifts they use to cheat distance and time, to travel instantly from place to place, are wounds in the veil of reality. We rovers have seen many things, not Aetherial, pass through their rifts to enter our world. Even if we could drive them all out, will these wounds ever heal?

this is what makes grim dawn very capable of being featured in lots of crossover fanfics! Grim Dawn x Diablo (imagine the taken pawning diablo and all his brothers/sisters in diablo 2, so that diablo 3 doesn’t exist!), Grim Dawn x Titan Quest (Bringing movement augments into empty spot such as displacement, displacement, and displacement into Titan Quest!). or just Grim Dawn x Our Reality.

Found another one:
When you are in Homestead area, heading for the Abomination, you´ll face some imprisoned trolls - presumably waiting to be aetherized or similar.
- Why do they - as prisoners - still possess their guns?
- One of them shot me out of his cage. The door broke open this way. -> If they got a resemblence of a brain, they should all be free by the time you arrive.
Another one:
When you finish your way through the Maw of Enath, you find Carmacs last note.
Yet, you can afterwards meet him in the conclave.
