Low Gear threshold Arcanist build?

Hey guys! Brand new player here, although I’ve played ARPG’s for quite some time.

As my favorite way to play has always been caster, I’m definitely going to roll an Arcanist as my first character. I’m open to suggestions as to what my secondary class should be, but generally my play style has been a toon that is semi glassy, but deals a lot of damage (direct or over time) from afar and has a few tools for escape when things get hairy. To that end, I’m looking for something that isn’t going to be impossible to build right now due to my lack of gear. I’ve been browsing some threads, and just about all of the builds I see you guys posting are rated for a much higher threshold of gear than I could possibly put together on a first run through. I don’t mind staying away from some of the extremely difficult places for the time being, but I would really enjoy being able to see most of the game with one build. I can always roll something else later once I’ve farmed up some gear on this guy.

Can anyone help me out? If anyone needs any more information I can certainly provide it. Thanks a ton and good to meet you all!

P.S: My knowledge about the game at this point is virtually zero. I’ve spent maybe an hour or two trying to gather up some info to school myself. Keep that in mind!

I guess something you might like would be a Warlock, Arcanist + Occultist. No class is without some tools for surviving, but Warlock is the most caster-ish combo available. You could try getting a Hellhound, invest in +pet health, and have it be your tank while unleashing the fury with Trozan’s, Panetti’s, or Albrecht’s, plus Devastation from time to time. Curse of Frailty + Vulnerability are valuable for lowing enemy resistances and slowing, and healing from Sigil of Consumption and Blood of Dreeg.

Something to understand is that very few builds can just say “death is the best CC” and just kill everything before dying themselves. And those few builds have to have the BEST gear. Everyone NEEDS something to survive with. I tried glass cannon with my spellbreaker… not very effective.

If you haven’t found grimcalc already, maybe play around with it a bit, see what you like.

Ok, duly noted. I guess I am just used to playing D2 where if you had really good micro you could kite just about everything without needing hard cc. I am not very far yet with my experimental character, so I don’t really have a great idea of what I’ll be up against later on. I suppose the best antidote would be to just experiment and see what works and what doesn’t.

In the past I’ve always liked to play these twitchy type casters that could dish it out at the cost of getting wrecked if anything made it on top of you…I think it’s just a little more exciting for me than something that’s…well rounded? In any case, thank you for chiming in and offering some good advice. Happy hunting friend
