Make Roads Better and Pathable

Would it be possible for roads to smooth or average the terrain beneath them when placed? The idea is that the land under the road would automatically level out (to some average of the surrounding heightmap), making the road more pathable and consistent.

This came up for me while building a road up into a mountain—flattening the land manually was a bit of a headache because it was hard to predict how much the flattening tool would affect the surrounding terrain. Smoothing beneath roads automatically might not only make placement easier, but also help prevent roads from deforming when nearby terrain is later flattened (especially if this smoothing effect is reapplied or enforced during such changes).

I have thought about something similar; it would be neat if the ‘leveling out’ could just be integrated into the building process like the way clearing the ground of trees or stones is now handled. So in effect building on uneven ground would simply take a lot longer than building on even ground - but of course this makes even more sense for roads.
