Mature Trees Only checkbox

There doesn’t seem to be a consensus on what constitutes a “mature tree”. I was hoping it meant trees that had reached the maximum yield for that type of tree. If that was what it means then it’s bugged as my work camp workers were chopping down maples with a yield of 4, which I’d have preferred to leave till at least 9.

If on the other hand if means any tree that is old enough to make seed and spawn baby trees, then the setting is not actually useful to me, as I am trying to manage trees for sustainable supply.

I believe the behavior is, oldest trees first and thus will continue to clear an area if you have too many workers. I try to move the work around around to compensate for this.

It makes them cut down trees that are at their max wood yield. So for some it’s 7 but some give 4 when they are mature. They don’t touch younger ones.

This is correct. Trees are considered mature when fully grown and thus, at their max wood content. There are different sizes of trees (small, medium, large, etc.) that have differing amounts of wood. So a mature small maple tree will have less wood than a mature large maple tree.

Pejot are you sure? All my maples end up the same size if I leave them to grow. I’ve not seen any smaller that have finished growing. Maples and Oaks grow to 10 max but I am ok with chopping them at 9 rather than miss them and get them dead for 2. Spruces seem to be 6 maximum. Anyway all I know is that with mature only checked, they’d pretty much decimated the area other than tiny saplings when I remembered to check. I am choosing the trees by hand now, and I must say I am getting logs quicker like that than using work camps.

Yes i am sure about it. Tested it a lot. Take into consideration that planted trees start bigger than the ones that grow naturally. Best way to check this is in any filter view that turns off foliage cause trees stay and You can se saplings better.

They grow to 10 but are considered mature when they reach 7.

Ok, technically they are mature as they can bear fruit or seed. But a) I don’t want all the trees cut down that can bear seed or there will be no new trees spawned and b) it is a waste of the workers time to cut down trees with less yield. I’d rather they declared “no more trees” after getting the high yield trees so I can move them on. Alternatively give another option for max size trees only. Fortunately Crate have already said they intend to add intelligent forestry industry

I think the latest patch reverted the changes to how fast they cut vs how fast they regrow. Maybe unintentionally. It worked fine for me before 0.7.5f so 2 workers could work endlessly in dense forested area but after newest patch they started to clear the area like they did before.

Yes, I noticed this as well on the new patch. Trees do grow fast, just the wood cutters cut them faster than they can grow.
