My Thoughts After 28h - Feedback

Hey guys,

I decided to share my thought after 28 hours of playing Farthest Frontier. I am not expecting you to agree or disagree, I am just laying things on the table, do with this information what you want :smiley:

First of all, game is pretty enjoyable and satisfying, you can feel the progress and the threat from enemies.
That said, I feel like game is lacking few functionalities.

  1. Easier to find and more descriptions of the materials and items - at first I was struggling why and for what I should use few items, what is the difference between primitive weapons and a weapons in stats, why should I have leather coats if I have linen clothes, what do I do with sand etc. I finally found answers to some of my questions but still more descriptions after hovering over the item wouldn’t hurt;

  2. Missing minimap / map - The maps are huge, there are a lot of resources out there, enemies waves are getting bigger and bigger… Moving around to find what you want is just silly. When raid start I need to stop every few seconds to check if enemies attack from the different side… I know you want to make a game harder than easier but this is just uncomfortable. I would suggest to add map and if someone don’t want to play with it just add a checkbox in starting game settings. For resources, I would suggest a simple filter, you can wrote in it something like ā€œgoldā€ or select it from the list and it show you on the discovered parts of map. I don’t actually know what would be better, big tab with map probably better for searching resources, minimap way better when handling raids and threats;

  3. Setting priority - Current option is to set building to ā€œhave priorityā€ or tree/rock one by one but I feel like this is not enough for a highly management game, first of all you should have option to bulk prioritize all of the things (even prioritize repair or if resources from/ to building should be taken immediately) by selecting area. Clicking every little tree to be cut down now because situations made you do it is tedious and not necessary. Also have levels of priority would be nice, like 0-10 scale what is more important in the moment;

  4. More information about workers - I am lack of workers or builders sometimes, but when I have big city with a lot of workers I am wondering what they actually doing… 100 unemployed workers, everywhere resources on the ground, a lot of work to do, trees and rocks selected to cut and it feels like nothing happening… Where are those people? I am sure they are working hard but where, why and what are they doing right now?

  5. Basic resources ā€œend gameā€ - ok I know it will probably change but in the state that I could name ā€œend gameā€ my whole city relay only on the traders - pure luck - I am buying all logs, rocks, iron that I find. I cannot deliver wood logs faster than I use them… I have working camps all over the maps, changing areas of work on those every few minutes of playing… If you what to go in this direction I would suggest, free selecting as much area as player want. Let them work. I don’t feel like this micromanagement is necessary. Maybe better way would be something like a tree planter, who can boost trees growing by planting them everywhere in the area. In my gameplay I actually don’t have access to some resources anymore, or I can’t find them. I hope in the future there will be a solution for that, waiting for the trader with needed resources at the moment is stupid, if you unlucky your whole city can collapse. Or maybe if we are going in the trader option, let us select which resources are more desirable and those will show up more often to buy;

  6. Bulk upgrading roads - clicking on every single road to upgrade it… not necessary minigame;

  7. Battles/fights/raids aren’t very pleasant - I don’t know, army management is a bit odd, selecting those flags is not comfortable, I am always looking forward to finish those as fast as possible, maybe the system need a bit of rework;

  8. Recall workers. When the raid starting I am clicking the damn bell on the city center to prepare people for the fight, but my people dont give a damn f… :smiley: They are of course running when horde attacked them, but some some of them likes to go out of my wall just straight into the enemies, specially freight cars. When I ring that bell I expect people to stay in their houses… unnecessary deaths happen;

  9. Performance issues - I have RTX 2080TI overclocked, i9 9900k, 32gb ram, ssd. I don’t know is that good enough or not, but I thought is should be enough. The game is struggling for me in my gameplay. I have about 700 people in the city I lowered every video setting to lowest and I have between 3-19 FPS. When the raid comes, I have to slow game down to 1/2 time, zoom as close as possible to have any FPS’es. I actually stopped playing because I want to build much more but I cannot anymore.

That’s all for now, I hope I explained it at least 50% correctly.
Best regards and I am waiting for the next updates.

On the subject of not wanting raids: When you get to the first setup screen (where you name your town and select your geography) there are buttons and scrollbars. One of the buttons says ā€œPacifist Mode?ā€ Clicking that button will give you a game in which there are no raiders. Unfortunately, there are also no wolves or wolf dens, which penalizes us pacifist players on food. Setting up two or three hunters near enough to a wolf den results in the hunters killing and butchering the wolves for food. But that is only in non-Pacifist games. Also on that same screen there is a bar identified with ā€œAdvanced.ā€ Click on that and you get another screen that gives you choices of levels of play. Easiest is the Pioneer level. As you move left through the choices, they get harder and harder.

If you referring to point 7, I like battles, it gives you a bit of challenge, my thought was the fighting mechanics are not very satisfying for me at least.

To make it clear, I really like a game and I enjoy it a lot. I also appreciate the options of settings the map for your own preferences, those points above are the things which I noticed and noted in my head while playing.
