[Mythical] Fiendgaze Tome [1.0.6.0]

[Mythical] Fiendgaze Tome: added 50% of Physical dealt as Chaos for pets.

This looks like one of those items that looks like it got a big overhaul in order to obtain some sort of niche, but I’m having trouble what people would use this for. Not only does the change feel underwhelming, but it makes obsolete the entire Desecrator Covenant Set. Having to trudge through to get a full 5-piece set only to have a single Mythical item perform the same function is not what a ARPG designed on finding elusive loot should be about.

Mind you, that’s not the only thing up with this item:

  1. The aforementioned permanent 50% Physical to Chaos conversion from the set, except the set also uses the off-hand slot.
  2. We already have 100% Physical to Chaos, if only through a proc, so a permanent 50% conversion is only good for adding weight to the conversion formula.
  3. The Fiend’s Gaze proc only works on Critical Hits, and a mere -10% Chaos RR is not nearly worth going through the efforts of getting a high enough OA to crit consistently as a pet build.
  4. The skill bonuses are just odd for a pet build: you have Possession, Hellfire Mine, Necromancer and Reap Spirit.
If you’re playing a Cabalist, there’s no way you’re using Possession as your Exclusive Skill. Hellfire Mine + Possession = Pyromancer, but if you’re playing a Fire Pet build, Mythical Wyrmclaw grants pet OA, pet Crit, and skill bonuses to Raise Skeletons. Chaos damage to Reap Spirit looks cool, except the Reap Spirit Wraith does no Physical damage, so the conversion is completely useless on it.

Who can grant flat Physical damage to pets and somewhat help with the Chaos pet theme?

Defiler (Demo + Necro) can, but good luck getting skill points to both Flame Touched, Temper, and Raise Skeletons, especially as you need 50 points in Demo just to use Hellfire Mine in the first place.
Apostate (Inq + Necro) can, but the itemization is even worse for this class combo, though it’s good that Death Sentence is easier to get bonus points.

Like the Diviner’s Set, this looks every bit the piece of equipment that serves no purpose for pet builds, but sees use in non-pet builds such as one of Chthon’s Chaos caster builds. This change just seems a bit baffling to me.
