Name the best game (series) ever in your favorite genres

  • aRPG: Grim Dawn, Diablo 2
  • MP shooter: Quake and Unreal Tournamen 2004
  • fighting: Streetfighter on the NES and Mortal Kombat 1-2-3
  • strategy in general: XCom both the old and reboots. Xenonauts also great addition.
  • pure RTS: Dune and the first Command and Conquer
  • slasher: Devil May Cry, Bayonetta
  • Narrative driven FPS games Half Life and Metro.
  • jRPG: Vagrant Story, Final Fantasy games pre 10-2, Legend of Dragoon, Chrono Cross/Trigger
  • retro platformer: Prince of Persia in DOS, Micky Mouse and Castle of Illusion on Sega Master System and then onto the earlier Mario games. The modern Axiom Verge is awesome as well.

Nobody mentioned might&magic and wizardry series? What is your problem guys?

I play almost only RPG and strategics, and have done so for over 30 years. Here is my top ten.

ARPG: Diablo2
Isometric RPG: Baldur’s Gate 2 w/ expansions | Planescape: Torment (tie)
Fist-person RPG: The Witcher 3
Open-world* RPG: TES: Daggerfall
MMO: None truly remarkable
pre-Windows CRPG: Eye of the Beholder | Lands of Lore1 (tie)
4X strategic: Master of Magic (it was a fantasy CIV with MTG spellcasting)
Strategic: HOMM 5, Honorable mention: Kingmaker
Strategic w/ RT battles: Total War Shogun, honorable mention: Crusader Kings
RTS: Warcraft 2 - then I abandoned the genre.
FPS: Quake - then I abandoned the genre.

[*for open-world I mean with randomly generated quests and dungeons]

I played those (all episodes) but IMO were not close to the best in genre, sorry.
RIP M&M forever btw with HOMM7 fiasco.

CRPG: Baldur’s Gate saga, Fallout 1&2
ARPG: I have to hand this one to Diablo 1, the one that got me down the long road that lead to Titan Quest and Grim Dawn
MP FPS: Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight, Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast, Jedi Academy
MMO: World of Warcraft
RTS: Starcraft. Was hooked within the first 10 minutes of playing
2D Platformer: Sonic the Hedgehog series on the Genesis
Turn Based Strategy: Worms, Civilization
Building: Sim City series

Sry but i can’t accept that someone doesn’t like m&m and wizardry. I challenge you to a duel.

Just started playing RDR2. I kinda see now why some people think its GOTY material!

Turns out this will occupy me time a lot before Grim Dawn:p

Honestly, I am not sure how to divide my favorite games since I mostly play ARPGs and RPGs but at the same time they don’t exactly feel like they are in the same genre. So, here is my try at distinquishing them.

Fantasy ARPG - The Witcher series, hands down. Elder Scrolls is close but Witcher beats it at every aspect, imo.

Post-apocalyptic ARPG - Fallout New Vegas. Only played it and 4, so can’t talk about the whole series.

Diablo-clone - Titan Quest: Immortal Throne. Despite how much smoother and quicker the action is in GD I just love TG more overall because of the mythology and setting. The epic journey is just that epic :x

Turn-based RPG - Divinity Original Sin 1&2. Very fun, great world. Hoping for a 3rd one.

Action-adventure - GTA series. God, I played most of it, even Stories. Have very fond memories, especially about SA.

aRPG: Grim Dawn
FPS: CoD 1 / MoHAA
RTS: Red alert 2 / C&C series (tiberium wars)

not fond of other genres, in the above stated genres I even went competitive or I just played a shit ton of hours in supposedly I might even have more hours in Red alert 2 than in GD

My list isn’t that big since I don’t play that many different types of games.

ARPGs: Titan Quest Immortal Throne and Grim Dawn
City builders: Best of the bunch for me are Children of the Nile and Emperor: Rise of the Middle Kingdom

Dont think i can pick just one…

ARPGs- Diablo 2, Grim Dawn, Sacred
JRPGs- FF9, Chrono Trigger
RTS- Rise of Nations
FPS- Medal of Honor Allied Assault, Crysis, Counter Strike
Open World stuff- All the Elder Scrolls games, Witcher 3
Management- Roller Coaster Tycoon 1-2
Sports- MLB The Show
TBS- Civ, Galactic Civilizations
Casual- Plants vs Zombies
MMO- WoW, Runescape

Lots of other great games, but those are the ones off the top of my head that have stuck with me the most. I buy a lot of games on steam sales and such, so i play a little of everything.

Grim Dawn is taking up most of my freetime time lately, but im messing with Parkitect as well.

ARPG: Titan Quest with expansions. (Grim Dawn gameplay is better, but I prefer TQ ambiance.
RPG: Tales series (Symphonia, Vesperia, etc)
Strategy: Fire Emblem series
RTS: Starcraft series
Multiplayer FPS: Unreal Tournament (1999)
Single player focused FPS: Serious Sam series
Simulation: The Sims series

Arpg: Grim Dawn, though credit to D1/2 for leading me here
Rts: C&C Red Alert, Total Annihilation
Fps: Half-Life, No One lives forever
Fps (MP): Quake 2, Unreal Tournament, Goldeneye
Jrpg: Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana
Platformer: Super Metroid, Dead Cells, Megaman X
Racing: Network Q RAC rally/Richard Burns Rally, Grand Turismo 2, Mario Kart, NFS:SE
Fighting: Mortal Kombat Trilogy, One Must Fall 2097
Point & Click: Monkey Island 2, Full Throttle, Life is Strange
Strategy: Jagged Alliance, Syndicate
Simulation: Transport Tycoon
Old C64: The Last Ninja
Sport: NHL '95, Super International Cricket

Since there are many unforgetable games in various genres, so I focused on old games.

FPS: DOOM… it was innovative and I became 3D sickness
aRPG (Hack and Slash): Diablo2
aRPG: Elder Scrolls series: especially Morrowind
RPG: Might and Magic, Baldur’s Gate
TBS: Master of Magic, Heroes of Might and Magic, Age of Wonders, Sid Meier’s Civilization
RTS: Dune2, C&C, The Settlers
Real time City building: Anno, Tropico
God Game: Populous, Dungeon Keeper
3D flying game: Magic Carpet
Collectible Card Game: MTG - Duels of the Planeswalkers

FPS: Borderlands 2
aRPG: Grim Dawn
RPG (Windows): Baldur´s Gate Series, Wizardry Series, Witcher 3
RPG (before Windows): Ultima IV + V, Bard´s Tale II + III, SSI-Games
jRPG: FF VII + VIII
