Yes, this is the great thing about this game, there are countless possibilities that make you feel good throughout the main content, not including the extreme one (like high Crucible and Shattered realm levels). For that extreme part you most definitely should use a META build and you don’t need to have more than one of those to farm. For rogue dungeons and nemeses encounters I think that most decent builds should work, which offers a reason to play these builds too, just for the sake of a different playstyle.
And I for one have noticed that skills which have internal damage scaling are much more powerful than the others. Like Cadence or Grenado have. Also, DARs are more preferable because they combine with the WPS, although it requires more investment. Skills like Doom Bolt or Eye of Reck don’t have any internal scaling, so they might not be raised too much in terms of damage. Also, there are a few pieces of gear that improve that internal scaling and makes them invaluable for a skill, like the Aetherwarped Cleaver for Cadence or the Octavius set for Forcewave and Aegis of Menhir. Lack of cooldown also increases dps, so a DAR seems like the best choice, compared to isolated skills like Forcewave or Doom bolt, which have a cooldown. Blade arc is good, but unfortunately it only scales bleeding damage internally. Thus, any flat physical damage added from skills or gear will impact Cadence much more than it impacts Blade arc.
I’ve put this one together a while back [forum post] [GT]
Wind devils (with extra summons from Nightbringer), Guardians, Storm Totems (which are not dissimilar from player-scaled pets), “hungering energies” procs from Morgoneth gear. Wasn’t amazing, but endgame capable. Didn’t try it in 1.3 though.
