So I find this amazing hammer item (Obsidian Juggernaut) on my main character, and decide that it’s so cool I want to make a whole build around it. A hard-hitting, armor-clad Witchblade who wields the infernal powers of chaos - and in particular, this amazing volcanic maul, which can invoke primal powers to rend the earth itself.
Badass.
So I level up a Witchblade. I discover immediately that DEE and acid/poison is the most efficient way to level. Not my intended style for the character, so I even nerd out and roleplay in my head a scenario where the character would reach lvl 58, discover the hammer, and convert to a chaos warrior from his old poisoning ways.
I get to lvl 58, respec my skills and devotions, change all of my gear and pick up my hammer. I head out and start smashing and the build is exponentially stronger than I had expected. And holy shit does it look cool! Sending out pulsing earthquakes to explode my enemies in eldritch fire.
I plug in my headphones to really get into the game. But something doesn’t seem right. I can hear plenty of satisfying whacks and thumps from my Cadence and Chaos Strike procs. But when I use my hammer’s ability, that I had explicitly built this character to utilize, I hear… nothing.
After closer audio inspection… I can tell you that this ability sort of sounds like a pencil being rolled across a table… across the room… while wearing earmuffs.
I don’t know if this seems petty, but for me this is a serious erection-killer. I was super excited to play this character and use this very cool ability, but after 2 hours of it not making the satisfying crunch sounds I expected… It just wasn’t fun. It was annoying. And it was my first disappointing experience so far with this great game.
Is this the only ability like this in the game, whose sound-effect seems muted and insufficient? Can this be fixed in a future patch? Help me out, Crate!
GD has many sounds that were phoned in last minute unfortunately, little reminders here and there that this is a tiny studio and they have to use placeholders for some things. Same sound applies to the Winter King helm’s ice attack (same gfx but ice) it looks really cool but it’s about as loud as sliding a letter under a door.
Sounds really get me immersed in a good game so it’s disappointing, but at least they HAVE sounds- there are plenty of things in the game that were never given sounds at all. Also you have probably noticed sound is GD’s weakest link. the voice acting is so awful it’s funny, the music is utterly forgettable, and the sound effects are really bad- even the monster voices (the Mad Queen grunts like a male troll for some reason). And have you heard the final boss’s funny little whimper when you enter his area?
i have to work with sounds and i have some seriously epic monster noises on my computer, Crate should let me hook them up lol.
I don’t know about you but I’ve played games with far, far worse.
There are only a few of the voices I don’t like much and there are a few that I think are very well done. Barnabas and Kasparov are exceptionally well done. Ulgrims is pretty good as well.
Grim Dawn voice acting doesn’t reach nowhere the awfulness of some high budget triple AAA games. I’ve heard much, much worse.
Ulgrim voice actor specially is really good. He pulls off the badassness and sass of Ulgrim really well. There is one time where his voice sounds way too deep, this happens when you meet him at Deadman’s Gulch if you pick either the first or second dialogue option, can’t remember which option.
Stay on topic, people!! Voice-overs are hard and require lots of work. All I need is one measly smashing sound! Or even just turn up the volume on the crappy sound that’s already there. Please, kind mister Crate employee sir!
I only get a small woosh of a default weapon attack swing, and then the sound of any on-hit procs that trigger when it hits. Like I said, the ability does have a little rumble sound effect, but it seems to be at 1/10th the volume of every other sound, and is only recognizable when using it in absence of an actual fight with other sounds to drown it out.
That rumble is just the standard sound effect for anything that moves earth, all the earthquake type procs use it. I agree that it’s not very impressive.
