Not a lot of variety in gear

One of the major problems in Grim Dawn, is that there is not a lot of variety in gear, my build is good but with no leg armor, armor boots, belt to use, it falls to either change to more offense or more defense. If I change to more offense, defense will be weak and I have no chance in ultimate, If I change to more defense. Offense will be weak and I have no chance in ultimate, so either way I am stuck.

I have been saying this for more then a year now, the change in itemization shouldnt be coming now. If there was more variety in gear, more builds would be viable. Gear is the problem, been saying this for more then a year.

I dont kiss ass, there are people that are going to reply and say no its fine, because they are kissing ass. But what I am saying is fact, variety in gear is the problem.

The evidence is right there, but people kiss ass and say its fine.

You make a compelling case, though more references to kissing ass would really sell it.

This is so by design. If you get too much offense and defense at once you become “too OP” and get nerfed.

+1 to this. There’s a balance to how much offense/defence you should have and gear plays an important role in that. Even at end game, Stonehide/Incorruptible and other prefix/suffix greens are invaluable for the resistances they provide.

TC, tell us what build you are using and we might be able to suggest you gear to aim for. I have doubts that you seriously cannot find any armour for so many pieces that fit your build, even faction gear can cover you pretty well at multiple stages of the game and there is a lot of faction gear to choose from.

I think you’re overreacting. Show some more examples.

We’re already having the occasional discussion about some slots being to minimal in choices. Resulting you to more often then not choose that specific item. For example Badge of Mastery and Golemborn boots are things you use in a lot of builds. Past two or three months people are seeing how Dreeg-sect MI’s are often best for pants. The other slots are often not that limited. And it sure as hell doesn’t make a build viable or dead in the water. You can always choose a less optimal piece of gear and still kill a nemesis. It isn’t that extreme of an impact mechanically as Gdante makes it seem… thankfully.

With the expansion we’ll be getting gear that will give stats to 3 instead of 2 masteries…opening up some more possibilities to be applied.

The only problem is lack of choice for certain slots. More diversity would be nice, but not necessary. Only a few gear slots need to be looked at so other available options become a more interesting choice to choose from.

How cute…

Yeah we get it, you don´t kiss ass, no need to be so anal about it.

As a professional ass kisser, I’m not really sure what you’re getting at here. You start off by saying that there isn’t a lot a variety in gear but you don’t say what’s missing or what you’d like to see added so that there can be more variety.

Then you start saying that if you build too offensively your defence will suffer and if you build too defensively your offence will suffer. Well I’m afraid I don’t now how else a player is meant to build there character in an arpg.

But you go on to say how this leads to too many builds not being viable. I say that if your definition of viable is being to solo mog and gladiator on 150 with extra spawns then you’d be right. However, if you’re like me and consider “viable” to mean that a build is able to solo all of the main content of the game at the highest difficulty, I think grim dawn, more than any other arpg out right now, has the highest proportion of builds that are viable, by a mile. I’m very confused.

hello Mr Trump, I did not know you were playing GD

  1. Almost all builds are “Ultimate viable” these days with the right items and devotions. Post any weird concept (such as poison battlemage) on the build forum and people there will come up with an item/devotion setup to plow through the main quest and Log.

  2. If a few item slots are what’s keeping your build from being Ultimate viable, then the problem is with your build, not item variety in the game itself. Post your build concept, items, and devotions to the build forum and people there can help you sort it out.

  3. People probably disagree with you because your starting premise is wrong (i.e. “my build is good” but “I have no chance in ultimate”), rather than everyone else in the entire world being ass-kissers.

what are the ones you think at ? Boots looks obvious to me (no MI and some crap/very specific legendaries), and probably gloves as well (might change with the expansion though). The last i can think about is ring but at least there’s some solid MI’s.

Well you have Black Matriarch of Deceit, Badge of Mastery and Avatar of Mercy as being top of the line for medal/necklaces for example. Sure you have dire wolf/bear crest. But they’re a lesser choice. And the rest there is almost nothing even worth considering. So options in those slots are very very limited. Increasing the stats on other items in that slot could make those more competitive and interesting as alternatives.

For rings there are quite some alternatives depending on what you’re going for. Obviously double rare MI’s from Cronley or Gollus will fill one slot. Then you use a Lifegiver signet or something else you need in the other.

Boots are very limited. Wraithborne, Golemborne…maybe Titan but that’s about it. There are no double rare’s worth considering. Nor anything else. So in those slots choices are extremely limited.

Legs you go for Solael or Dreeg-sect pants double rares. However you can still choose a fair amount of epics/legendaries without getting to the point your build can’t complete nemesis. So in that aspect its logical you try to go for double rares as final item. and the road to get there offers enough alternatives that are competitive enough.

Same for chest and head pieces. However in these cases you’re often looking at set items that give skill boosts to the masteries/skills you’re actually using. You need that max ultimate rank for your main damaging skill. So you get Badge of Mastery with +3 or +5 skill. And the chest/head piece gives you a lot as well. However the way it is currently setup your choices are indeed a little bit gated. When you choose masteries you already know which 2 or 3 choices you have at the end. This will get “fixed”, at least opened up some more, with the expansion. Where items will now have 3 mastery options for usage instead of 2. Will have to see how that’ll work out.

Then there is another angle of approach for this topic. If you go for example with a Forcewave build. No matter which damage type conversion, you’ll end up with a Defender’s set and a double rare tyrant’s axe that gives + skill to forcewave. meaning that some skills only function if you wear that 1 specific set in the end. How to fix this is different from the above situations.

Instead of opening up possibilities by adding +skils to additional masteries…the devs also have to make additional gear to allow multiple possibilities for each skill someone could use as their base of attack. Seeing you can even make Bloody Pox your base damage dealer, believer it or not, it requires a lot of gear creation. Not sure how the devs would be able to do that with their resources.

Slightly off topic, but…

I tried this. With every legendary designed for it. It doesn’t work, it gets outdamaged by whatever devotion proc you attach to it :frowning:

Would love to see some more items for this skill/build, but it would indeed take quite some time.

i didn’t say it was a great experience. i said it works…and that’s about all that can be said about the frustrating experience

It works, true I suppose. But so does completing the game with just auto attack. Probably more fun as well
