(not-so-serious subject) How do you come up with character names?

I just think about the character a little bit. I used to use other things but lately I have switched to real names. A few:

Marlowe Vern Beckham (A Farmer, Blade Arc Blademaster)
Eira (The Daughter of the Winter King, Cold Spellbreaker)
Orland Beckett (An Ex-Con, Stunjacks Commando)

I tend to name my characters by legends, settings and mythology-related names. Sometimes I think of names by myself that relates to the core theme build of the character.

Example of this

My chars:
-Morgana - pet conjurer
-Sigurd - physical/bleed warder
and others with plain and simple names

and planning to name the next chars as
-Bothrod, The First Balrog (Fire Commando)
-Dark Lord Melkor (chaos AAR sorcerer… come on, completely fits it)

and something I was thinking for my DEE warlock (I have jsut happened to complete dreeg set) is the name… I am debating between Balar de Danaan or just simply Greed (try getting it ;))

PS: I have thought about the name of the skill Dreeg’s Evil Eye… may it be a reference to Balar who has a large eye in his forehead? he is known as Balar of the evil eye

All of my characters are names related to a story I started to write but never finished (hope that I do one day).

Mortelus, my favourite, was created by using the French word for death ‘Mort’. ‘El’ is a northwest Semitic word for God, however, Elus comes from Cronus whom the Phoenicians called Elus.

So Mortleus is a Death God if you like

For this game, however, I play on HC only and my characters are named after their ancestors if you like, using roman numerals (see below).

After a clean install I started the naming cycle again, my current Armathus II is actually Armathus IX.

Rogue Legacy?

Huh?

No I create all my own names and any copying is unintentional. I started writing my book way back in 2008.

Malagon is another name I use, but that was character I made in EQ2

My favorite named character is Kawah Ijen… bonus points if you get that reference.

It’s from this the volcano Kawah Iljen that burns with blue lava

Other than that I mostly use names of characters I like who seem to ‘fit’ the build I want (and define that loosely) or character names that have come to mean something to me from long years playing MMOs previously.

Eh, I just name it something semi-random (“SoltSomething”) or based on what I want to build words so I don’t forget (“DoubleDash” - Soldier Blitz + Nightblade Shadowstrike so I can get to mob packs faster than running :stuck_out_tongue: )

I like to name my characters either randomly as I think of a name, OR I find mythological names tied with my country’s history. Bonus points if they fit the characters “nature”. Sometimes I have to roleplay a bit and invent a personality for them. Sidenote: Thats why I did not like Fallout 4’s protagonist being voiced.

Examples:

Andrimner, Fire strike saboteur. He is the chef in Valhall, and is therefore much around fires. (Cooking Særimne, the eternally respawning pig.)

Fenrir, Warder. Tanky 2-hander. Fenrir or Fenris is a wolf. A big bad one at that.

Helblindi, PB Witch Hunter. Brother of Loki, which makes him the uncle of Fenrir the wolf.

Hrimnir, Witch Hunter. Means “Covered in soot”, or “Hoarfrost”. Only lvl 23, maybe he should be either cold or fire based?

Hvedhrungr, Bleed Trickster. Obscure name for Loki. Brother of Helblindi. Father of Hel, Jormundgandr and Fenrir. Just to name a few.

Hyrrokin, Aether Lightning damage Conjurer. Name means “Fire-Smoked”, possibly referring to a dark, shrivelled appearance. Moved a ship Thor was unable to budge. Female Jotne, a Gyger.

Jormundgandr, DEE, poison/acid Conjurer. The great serpent, child of Loke. I would argue it is most likely venomous.

Lucien, Markovian tank with Aether warped Cleaver. Lucien, simply a somewhat sinister name I think. An old username I still occasionally use, sometimes combined with the last name “Rahl”. (Kudos for any that get the reference.)

that’s awesome - sounds like it could be some dreaded Uruk-hai commander in The Lord of the Rings.

I used to pull up names of gods from around the world and choosing one that was thematically appropriate, but that ended up taking too long after a few dozen characters. Nowadays I come up with a random spelling of a name that I haven’t seen before.

The thing that is consistent is that I’ve always added a sort of suffix that simplistically describes what the build does, taking a cue from Crate’s naming convention of some heroes. A few examples:
Nahar the Blade
Ata the Volcano
Fickle Rax

Almost always have one character named Highlander, Duncan or Conor. Sometimes based on skills I want to use. I have a pistol build that rains fire everwhere named Firewitch. A battlemage named frostbite from Olexa flash freeze. Some times resort to the DC or Marvel universe for names.

I have 3 modes for naming, I have my favorite normal names, such as Egon, Iris, few others. If I use them then I go with option 2 or 3, #2 is I try to google words from other languages for a build fitting name.

#3 If that fails I go pun / word play, Grenade demo girl named blond bombshell, a on block effect tank named Bloc Quebecois, or even just something as simple as a path of exile build I did with an attack speed build, so I called him fofidystabsamin. Not very complex but works to separate everyone.
