Odd Question about characters...

greetings:

So I have this character, and I want to test a few things (Class wise, or builds if you prefer).
Now, I don’t want to start over every 10 minutes to begin a new idea, so, is there a way, I can backup my character, or copy and rename it?
I am looking to “clone” my current character, to use him as base for the build tests.

Can this be done?
If yes, how, please?

Thank you.

Sure, make a copy of your characters folder and put it somewhere save.

Char save locations: These are the default install locations, if you have installed steam elsewhere then please navigate to the steam folder there.

Steam
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\folder of numbers\219990\remote\save\main

Grim Dawn
C:\Users\username\Documents\my games\Grim Dawn\save\main

Best to turn of cloud saving in steam and Grim Dawn before you start messing around with save files. If you DO use cloud savings now, you will have to move your save folder from the steam location to the Grim Dawn location (see above).

Just to be safe make multiple copies of everything before you start.

Best of luck.

just make a copy of the player.gdc file. You can make as many copies as you want, just make sure you put them in seperate folders so you know which file is which character.

or you can use GD Defiler (to change the characters name and hence make a new player.gdc file. This method you need to make new character folders)

Thank you both.
Most kind!

To ensure nothing goes awry, i copy the whole Grim Dawn save folder. Learned the hard way that copying part of it can have adverse effects (lost my blueprints).

For a new char, it may not be important but if done with higher leveled chars, there can be issues.

Before all: I play the Grimellion Mod!
So there be no confusement in this regard.

So, I tried a few different ‘renamers’ such as there be: GD-Stash, GD-Item Assistant, and one that momentarily eludes me.

Now, either they simply do not load my character, or I manage to actually load and corrupt it, during saving.
I DID point Stash to the Mod, loaded it (though it seems to have given a ton of errors, exclamation marks to be precise, and found no items, though item base WAS loaded).

There’s quite a few issues when it comes to character editing.

So, my question is: is there a way around this, so I can have my Clone renamed but as actual character without the need of backing up/restoring/…?

Thank you.

If you rename the character then you need a new folder for each new name.
Then you want to make sure you copy the original
levels_world001.map folder
and put a copy of it in each new character folder along with the new player.gdc

If you are having issues you can upload your character folder and send it to me along with what names you want them to be. And I will make you them for you.

Thank you.

Yes, I did that.

But this does not rename my character.
And the tools either do not load the character, or it corrupts it during saving?

I use GD Defilier for renaming.
You just load the character you want to clone into GD Defilier rename it and then hit save as.
Type in player.gdc and hit save. This will give you a new player.gdc file that is the exact same as the original but with a new character name.

You then make a new character folder put in the new player.gdc file and put a copy of the levels_world001.map folder.
Then both characters should load up just fine.

Sir, GD-Defiler did the trick!!!

Can’t quite get that the other tools basically failed?

Ah well, does not matter, as it worked with GD-D!

Thank you very much, Sir.

No Problem
